Pelley's such a turd, man. I don't think that it was him picking these two helped the skepticism - he really does not inspire confidence.

He sucks at talking and he's clearly pretentious or whatever, but this was the best and most extensive process they've ever had to find a GM. And they landed on a pure data guy. Maybe it was an accident, but I have no complaints about where things landed in the end.
I will say that he's clearly not well liked within MLSE. Mirtle and Jonas were saying they had like 20+ people reach out to them about his antics during the deadline and people within the organization were pissed about it.
Which again.. was arguably probably a good thing. He needed to get in there and be disruptive to whatever the fuck Tre was doing. So it's hard to know for sure if he's entirely in the wrong there. He probably could have done that with more tact while being more likable tho.
If he stays out of the way now like he's seemingly doing with the other MLSE clubs, then I'd say it was all worth it. They took a PR hit but I think they landed on the right person in the end.
How many negative think pieces on a dead man do you need?
I don't get the "Tre is getting off easy" narrative that I'm reading here,
Treliving was fired. Isn't that enough? Nobody in the media defended him. Everyone saw The Leafs go from top of the standings to the bottom....and they might not even keep their pick because of a trade everyone now acknowledges was a disaster.

Nvm, I just read the article that Jonas wrote about him after he was hired. Jonas keeps referencing it as if it was a scathing review, but it was pretty kind compared to the stuff we've seen on Chayka. But as he constantly points out, he was the ONLY person in media that even had a slight criticism on the hire. But then he also says they shouldn't have fired Shanahan and that he was such a great president etc etc. so it's just a weird contradiction considering that hiring process was entirely fireable in itself. There was 1 when he was hired, from Jonas Siegel vs 5000 on Chayka.
And then 0 after he was fired. Just Pelley hit pieces on him deciding to save the organization from Tre. I would have liked to see just 1 hit piece personally. Just a single acknowledgement that he set back the organization
Yeah, I don't think it's really debatable Treliving got way better treatment despite way worse results. Also still searching for the Tre versions of these:

Dubas’s dubious performance won’t fly with the Penguins
In Toronto, Dubas’s job was managing expectations, but in Pittsburgh he’s managing the decline of Sidney Crosby, the greatest player many fans have ever seen – that’s an actual responsibilitywww.theglobeandmail.com
