The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

I just feel like there are a few teams, like Detroit for example who would be insane to let a Werenski go on the block without getting him.

Hell, the Sharks, who have the deepest pool in hockey and desperately need a D, should be offering 2nd overall in a package.

I dont think Toronto competes with this.
Guess which team is also one of those "few teams"?

Columbus has been rebuilding for 25 years. They'll want elite young NHL talent in return. And I don't think Detroit or San Jose could compete with a player as good as Knies. Unless Detroit trades Raymond. Which they won't.

Werenski is a Norris caliber D.

Andersson at peak is maybe 30th in the NHL and there is a real risk hits his downside really soon.
I love Werenski. He’s one of my favorite non-Leafs. But he’s also 29, makes $10m+, and might make it to ufa in two years and could be had for free. Knies is 23, locked in for years for cheap, and might still grow into a 40/90 power forward.

If you reframe the situation as a trade, which would you rather have, Raddysh Knies or Werenski Maccelli?

They're cup contenders with Werenski tbh. A winger is way easier to replace in the market than a #1 D. They'll be able to find someone that provides some of what Knies brought and will definitely have the cap space to do it.

But you are right that most teams wouldn't have or offer up a Knies in this kind of trade. 23 year old 70 point power forwards with a reasonable AAV, locked up for awhile don't grow on trees.

In all the Chayka hate leading up to that presser, one of the criticisms of him was how he "quit" on his team, but didn't Tre essentially do the same thing with the Leafs?

Repeating "no good players will ever be available for trade, and if they are no way leafs will ever be able to trade for them" a million times won't make it true btw.

We had unreal draft luck, but could use one insane lopsided trade now. One where the GM on the other side loses his brain and gives us a good player for some combination of the junk we have like Carlo, Maccelli, and Joshua. I know Domi will retire a Leaf now so no point including him even in any fantasy proposals.

Asking for no particular reason: I notice that Walman's ice time this year was pretty low and tailed off near the end. Did he fall out of favor with the Oilers? Is he just shit?
