The Official 2026 Off-Season Thread: Revenge of the Nerds

He just took a first place team and absolutely decimated it, with what, two separate 8 game losing streaks to end the year?

You better believe he wants a chance to rehabilitate that reputation and get the benefit of McKenna and new UFAs being brought in by new management so that the disgrace falls squarely on Tre in public opinion.

Too bad he's the biggest reason the team was trash last year and put out a product that even the most devoted fans found stomach-turning.

Guaranteed that, if given the opportunity, Berube healthy scratches McKenna for at least several games.

Yes and additionally, who’s the fringe gudpro plug that he’ll feed minutes to instead now that Jarnkok is gone?

Berube cana basically tell chayka 2 things to explain last year.

1. My system sucks

2. My players suck and are pussies

I don’t think either keeps him his job.

3. Tre is a know-it-all spoiled nepo baby, amirite? I brought up xGF once — he got so bent out of shape, he traded my favourite player to the Habs. Thank god he didn’t know how to use our new fax machine

He will definitely try to blame it on Tre. He let Marner walk, replaced him with Joshua, Maccelli, Roy.

What's a dummy who dropped a fucking barbell on his own head supposed to do with that?

Obviously, did the best he could by scratching Robertson and Cowan frequently before the deadline, and keeping Benoit and Myers in there as much as possible. Rotate Jarnkrok in and out of the lineup a bit. He pretty much exhausted all available options.

There are youtube channels that post all players shifts in a game. It lets you see their whole game not just see their best plays. I watched one game of IMO the four most interesting prospects, making me an expert, and no one close to McKenna.

Mckenna is just special. He is so smart and he has all the skills to play at the speed his brain is processing at. Never mind the draft, the way he sees the ice and controls the pace to manipulate the D is something most NHLers can't do. The only reasons he wouldn't go first is that it took him half a season to adjust to the NCAA. But he adjusted. From a production standpoint there aren't many close in all drafts combined. You can shit on his effort off puck, but he's just doing what has worked for him. He's backchecking hard in the third period of blowout games. His game will evolve in the NHL, just like it did moving up to the NCAA.

Stenberg is a really good player. He's also really smart, but the skill level is nowhere close. He's a high hockey IQ grinder (thats small and average speed). His xG number must be very good. He's a winger version of Aho. Very good player that any team would gladly take, but all Carolina has wanted for years is a guy like McKenna.

Chase Reid is awesome. His eye test is unreal. He's the best skater of all the top guys by a lot. He also controls the pace of play because he is so good without the puck. He just kills plays and the puck is going the other way. He's big, he is physical one on one. He's like a Jake Sanderson/Drew Doughty type. I don't think he'll score like Makar/Hughes, but he's a stud. If Mckenna was closer to a Hughes type maybe you take him 1. If he was a Hischer, Slafkovsky of course. But not over a McKenna. I would take him 2 in a heartbeat.

Carels production is elite. Amazing passer with a big shot though. He has higher offensive potential than Reid. But, it obvious why old school scouts like Reid more in spite of the production. I'm guessing Reids analytics are better too. He plays aggressively which gets him in trouble without the puck and his skating is good, but not elite.

I don't think Reid will be available at 5. Carels, maybe. And that would have been a lovely pick. Verhoeff.. I've seen him as low as 11 on some lists. He really tailed off and was a downright liability late season in college. Really struggled with the pace. I would have been gutted if that's who they ended up with. He may have decent upside, but his floor is really low.

One of the best parts of getting the first pick is that we don't have to worry about the Leafs picking him.

Tre would have loved him

like a dummy i listened to it and of course the implication of the headline selected quote doesn't describe what he was saying - he says a meeting isn't actually important because all that matters is the moves they actually make....all while taking pains to make sure that matthews isn't leaning one way or the other. and then amusingly goes on to say this isn't 'necessarily' about this summer but could be at the deadline or next summer or the next deadline.....

so yeah it's status quo - obviously matthews wants to see the team try to contend. if the leafs continue to suck or rebuild then obviously it makes sense for him to move - but that's true of both him and the team.

CJ is doing his best to spin something obvious into something sinister.
