The best is, if we'd won against Florida last year with a 9 shot effort in game 7, they would still be talking about how we didn't deserve to advance.

But the Habs are fucking hockey marvels for getting to the third round and playing only one game out of five once they got there.

Yeah, the fact that Matty wasn't the first name out of his mouth speaks voluuuuuuuumes given what their relationship used to be, and also gives some insight as to the Paul stuff.

The whole thing, imo, is measured in titles and proximity from a title. If the Leafs had made the conference finals and then ran into a championship calibre team that historically mollywhopped the shit out of them, showing them that they're nowhere near that level, I don't think I'd feel better about it all than if they lost to a similar cup calibre team in the 1st or 2nd round in a 7 game series that legitimately could have gone either way.

Honestly, that was the most agonizing thing about that whole era of Leaf hockey, you kept seeing them lay the boots to elite teams for stretches in a series, even in higher pressure games sometimes, and wondered if they finally figured it out.

Thing is, if he was actually smart, mature and self-aware enough to do that and wasn’t a thin-skinned uber-insecure bitch that’s totally obsessed with slights both real and imagined against him no matter how big or small, he would still be a Maple Leaf and mostly beloved by the fanbase to this day.
 
He could've been one of the most beloved Maple Leafs of all time.

Look at the reception that Mats is getting after 15 years.

He would've been at or near the top of nearly every franchise records lists except goals.

He'd have a fucking statue outside the stadium even if he never ended up winning a cup.

What a fucking donkey.

But would he have been more beloved than Auston?

Because you see, that's the root of his problem here. He need it all to be about him, and when it wasn't, he got sad. I can guarantee very few things in life, but one of the few things I will guaranfuckingtee is that Brian Matthews doesn't have an unhinged burner account where he screams into the twitter void about Auston carrying Mitch Marner.

I will say this one thing, not to put a damper on all the positives lately, but we have to see what Matty does from here on out.

Is he just Marner part deux, and stuck because he had more term left, and has similar bullshit crybaby nonsense that defines him, or does he step up from here and become a true captain, who is all in on the team, says he wants to be here for his career, signs the next extension without drama, takes his game up a notch in the playoffs, and starts to smile a bit when he's on the ice.

Because, not gonna lie, I have definite concerns about him after this past season and summer, and I really am going to be optimistic about him impressing us in every aspect of his role here now. I hope he doesn't let me down.
