The official NFL thread

It’s tough actually the way his previous deals were structured— he’s not good enough to overcome deficiencies in OL and D like guys like Russ or Mahomes were able to do

It’s tough for every….try not having a QB as good as Cousins tho, and it’s damn near impossible.

He put you guys in a position to do it a couple times, and if the rest of the team didn’t pull it off….that’s how the cookie crumbles. Rivers never got it done through no fault of his own either.

3 years at like $28 mill, and couple at $33m….plenty of work to get things done if you do the work effective elsewhere.

…..but again, that’s not the argument anyway, that’s the pivot Jonas moved to, to cover how dumb his initial statement was.

Ironically his cap hit is not as thorny this year — they pushed so much money into the cap next year when presumably a rookie QB will be under contract

That’s how ya do it….you can always push some back, so long as you’re ultimately willing to eat it in the end. Vikes chose to largely eat it individually per year….(or Cousins was inflexible offsetting any of his guaranteed cash, but that’s baked into the decision making after his first 3 year deal anyway.

Again tho, he’s clearly a good enough QB to win with…..whether the Vikes were during his time, that’s another story. They aren’t the litmus test tho, either.

Many ways to win, of course, but by far the best way have been with a stud QB that outperforms his rookie deal (unless you have Tom Brady in his 30s agreeing to less than market value)

Rams won with $45m+ allocated to QB…..I just think it’s largely a lazy media narrative/obsession about the QB rookie deals, (unless it’s a world destroyer like a Mahomes)……while ignoring the amount of dead cap money teams are taking against the cap which usually play a far bigger role than any QB salary discrepancies.

Giants beat you guys last year in the playoff with their cheap rookie deal QB, while you had your way too expensive guaranteed money QB killing you…

Meanwhile they had $53m+ in dead cap space, while you guys only had $28m……a $25m discrepancy in dead cap

…..and I think for how often analysts and fans go on about QB salary or paying any one guy too much…..the amount of dead money they’re eating, often accounted for much more cap pain, than the QB/Star players salary.

Eagles had $65m in dead cap…..Chiefs $16m.

Rams were the outlier tho. And the only Super Bowl champ that allocated more than 15% of their cap on a single player in a long time

However, like you, I think it’s lazy to say “it’s impossible to win unless you do this one accounting trick”

Having said that, it sure is nice to underpay guys like Russel Wilson or Pat Mahomes, while using that money to sign or retain elite wideouts and pass rushers

Rams did a fairly good job hitting on usefull mid to late round picks ( the few picks they retained) to supplant around their big money stars. If you arent perfect in the draft it probably wont work.

And none of your big name adds can bust either.
