The official NFL thread

Like anything else, depends when you tank.

I’m not sure it is….Very few 1OA QB’s have won a Super Bowl with the team who drafted them, while fucktons of of great NFL QB’s get taken well into the draft.

Get it wrong and you have to give him 3-5 years to prove he aint the guy.

Which is why it’s probably smarter to continue trying to be as good as possible, including using FA to improve your QB position when possible, and then gamble on QBs you think have elite upside traits, that aren’t top 10 guys.

…if you’re naturally horrific without attempting to tank, and there’s a Manning, Luck, Lawrence….a generational guy with exceptionally low chance of busting, sure go for it.

Lamar, Mahomes, Rodgers, Russ, Cousins, Geno, Hurts, Love (?), Dak, Watson, Carr, Purdy….all gotten without using tank tier draft selections…

Vs the Wentz, Goff, Darnold, Lance, Z.Wilson, Jameis, Bradford, JaMarcus, David Carr…who used peak draft capital to return next nothing in the long run.

I think tanking is largely a bust strategy unless you get disgustingly lucky…..which you can also get just drafting later & developing.

….I think drafting QBs into shit scenario’s is a bum strategy too, that only multiplies the odds of a QB busting.

The other thing about drafting your QB in the teens, or later & developing them…..you can better time when to go all in building a contender, after you know you have your guy. (Cause in theory you should have a good overall team from not taking & using your draft capital on building a team)

You get a 1 overall, you hand is forced to build a contender as if he’s a stud, so you maximize the value of his rookie deal…..while he could be a Trey Lance, Darnold, Wilson, Rosen, Baker, etc….and unless a Purdy or A-Rod drops in your lap, it’s likely all a waste.

teams could absolutely win with Cousins…

It’s tough actually the way his previous deals were structured— he’s not good enough to overcome deficiencies in OL and D like guys like Russ or Mahomes were able to do

Ironically his cap hit is not as thorny this year — they pushed so much money into the cap next year when presumably a rookie QB will be under contract

Random question...

Do people actually think Justin Fields is a good quarterback? Is this some kind of intricate troll job that I haven't been aware of, and it's like the cool kids club that aren't letting me in?

He's a running back that throws the ball.

FIelds has this year to prove he’s more than a runner. If he fails, Bears have the draft capital to take another shot at a franchise QB
