The official NFL thread

That said i watched Ben Johnson call a play in which his WR ( who earlier celebrated a TD by humping) throw a terrible pick off his backfoot.

That's insane.

NFL owners are so fucking dumb. They attach way too much importance to coaches. Show me the fucking players. Belichik didn't become a "genius" until he had Brady. Before and after that, he was mediocrity personified.

plus a lot of coaches have GM style power over the roster/draft picks/free agent signings

That’s why we’re seeing coaches sometimes being hired before the GM

Except he won 3 titles with a fairly pedestrian Brady.

There was a dozen QB’s who could have put up the numbers Tom did for those early seasons/titles.

great coaches find the great players that excel in their system

….and often turn average players into those great system players, create offences/defenses that are greater than the sum of their parts, and maybe most importantly, can often find cheap replacements when players leave in free agency, specifically because they can turn average into great.

They’re also able to solve problems their team may face versus a certain offense/defense, and be able to create a tailor made gameplan to overcome it…..to me that’s where Belichick’s ultimate greatness came from.

Ultimately you need quality at all levels, from ownership all the way down…..but yeah gimme a great coach over the long haul, anyday.

For some reason NFL owners seem to meddle more than in any other sport.

So happy the Vikings owners know their lane and recently re-upped KOC for a while

Belichick would also do that in the macro…..I remember in the early years with the Pats he switched to a 3-4 defense, because the vast majority of the league had become 4-3 base….so 3-4 specific defenders were cheaper in the draft and free agency.

….then after a bunch of Pats success, the whole league had damn near flipped to 3-4 and (if memory serves) he went 4-3….them you had him doing the two TE sets with Gronk & Hernandez, I think he had the Pats go old school 80’s I-formation heavy run game for like a whole playoff run? He also was the original at leaning heavily into nickle and dime packages as borderline base defense, because the league had opened up so much aerially…

etc, etc, etc…

Yeah it can be kinda hard to tell when you even have horrible ownership, cause so much of it can happen quietly behind the scenes……but the greats hire quality football men, hand over the reins, and don’t mettle.

Unfortunately for Jets fans, our owner isn’t just a trust fund kid of the Johnson & Johnson empire….hes the son of a fucking trust fund kid.

He was born & bred in ineptitude. 😆

I feel for you….. and my buddy who’s a Browns fan… and a buddy who’s a Giants fan
