The Official Post-Bitch 2025-26 Regular Season Thread

I have it on good authority that one of the guys Marek mentioned as a potential fit is very interested in the job but thinks he will be blocked by the old boys club candidates.

The thing is weren't the nerdies good on Carlo. RHD who can play difficult minutes and suppress quality scoring chances? I honestly don't know.
They clearly overpaid (that's the deadline and Cup window doing the work) but they were getting quality and something they needed
Half your batlle is common fucken sense

Teams need to fully understand where team sits in the hierarchy of tiers and act accordingly

Seriously WTF were the Leafs a Laughton or Carlo away from ..........nothing

A fourth liner and a decent stay at home D isnt putting Toronto into the finals

The contending Avs moving 2 firsts for Roy and Kadri is a different calculated approach

Data driven is nice to help the odds of making the right decision but spreadsheets dont score goals or make saves

Most teams are great at useless bandaids and analytics dont fix stupid

a good analytical approach's best outcome is not overvaluing marginal contributors, actually.

With all due respect mate, if you think that it's a good idea to hire a GM who insists on tearing this down, trading everything and starting over, well, you've lost the fucking plot.

I think there's something between that and calling this a retool that makes sense. at the very least let a competent hockey person make the decision.

any GM candidate that uses the words "rebuild" or "retool" unironically should be immediately dismissed.

these are dumbdumb media words.

Sometimes a team has run its course and a major reboot is the only painful answer

I think you're getting at the heart of the issue without understanding why though. You have to remember, at the time those trades were made the Leafs were tops in the division and to a traditionalist, looked very much like a cup contender. Why wouldn't a high end defensive defender and a gritty 3C move the needle and potentially put that over the top? It was the analytics monkeys though who thought/knew that the Leafs were being carried by elite goalscoring and goaltending despite systems play being a fucking mess. It was the analytics monkeys who knew Carlo was a #5D and not a shutdown pairing guy, that Laughton was more of a winger than a centre and that we overpaid massively for him.

An analytically minded organization wouldn't have assessed that team positively at all, would have seen their record as lucky and wouldn't have invested in it like the dummy organization we were at the time did.

"tiers" don't matter. They're imaginery, or at best highly subjective.

selling off players like matthews and nylander and promising a "rebuild" is a bad GM's approach to earn himself 5 years of no criticism, with only luck maybe letting him end up with even one let alone two players like matthews and nylander again, but more likely zero of them, like we leafs fans experiences for 40 years before matthews.

Def don’t need a rebuild but a significant overhaul of the roster is necessary imo. The defense being unable to move the puck is just not going to get it done. Spending money on shit bottom 6 players is also not going to get it done.

Knies - Matthews - Nylander
Robertson - Tavares - Cowan

MCCabe - OEL
Tanev

Woll
Stolarz
Hildby

Those are who I probably keep. I don’t mean those as lines btw. Trade a goalie?

Doesn't retool just mean to do your job as a gm and improve the team?

Yeah, the devil is in the definitions here. I think the words "rebuild" and "retool" really just come down to whether or not you have a core of players to build around.

We obviously have a good core of players here, but need massive work done to the blueline and a huge change in style of play.

The sad thing is we really don’t have that good of a core. We have two fucking awesome players. And one of those guys is so good that you’d be stupid not to try to win with him.
