The Official Post-Bitch 2025-26 Regular Season Thread

Keeping this GM search this opaque is kind of backfiring from a PR perspective a bit here. Fans are just assuming it's pure doom and gloom and that they don't have a plan and that everyone they hire is going to be dumb, the process is dumb, their interviews were dumb, etc. All because we don't have enough information, so fans are going to fill in the blanks on the little information that they do have. And these are Leafs fans who are coming off a horrific season, with a bizarre Pelley presser, so obviously those blanks will be filled with pure misery and darkness.
Leafs fans have become all of our fathers.

Yeah that's the one fair critique, but even then, I'm not sure I would want Mats to pick the GM. Pelley is emphasizing the right traits for a GM IMO. Wanted Mehta, fell back on Chayka. Fine by me.

Pelley and Mats could have done it together…

1) say smart things at his intro presser. Not just in general...he has had more than enough time to analyze what went wrong with last year's leaf team and after multiple interviews should have a functioning plan on what the team needs

2) fire Berube

3) a reorientation of draft priorities. I don't want to see anymore 6'5 defenders who treat the puck like a grenade with the pin out

4) aggressive free agency period focused on skill. Mostly on the Blueline.

Do those things and I'm back in. Highly skeptical of a Chayka hire until I see all of those things

I will say Mats walking out to centre ice and hoisting the Cup as a member of Leaf management would be an unreal moment. Instant god status. Would likely cause a singularity to form on Bremner Blvd.

If there's one thing we can take from his Phoenix stint, it's that he likes a mobile blueline. I'm not particularly worried about that bit. The other stuff, yeah.. We'll see.

I could do 1 to 4… so I’m betting Chayaka can too! Those are all slam dunks.

Sundin may be able to help with something we have been very hit and miss on... getting toronto boys to want to come home. The guys who are 27-32 now and grew up leaf fans watching HNIC with parents knew Mats as their first Captian of the Maple Leafs.

I asked if MJ was in and got a confident highly likely. What that role is, that's another story but he will have a seat at the table with Sundin.
I mean everything I'm hearing about this process seems positive. They are going after the Mike Johnson's, not the Jeff O'Neill's. The Sunny Mehta's and John Chayka's, not the Marc Bergevin's.

It's all positive stuff from what I see. Cautious optimism.
