The Stats Thread

Re: Habs News & Notes: 2014-15 Season

Hossa played during the Senators dark years? Really? You mean those same Sens teams that made the playoffs every single year and never won less than 39 games every year he was there?

Yeah, dark years indeed.

And the two first years he was in Atlanta, Atlanta missed the playoffs by two points the first time and finished third in the conference the second year there. Had good +/- those years. His third year there, before being traded to Pittsburgh, Atlanta finished second to last in the East. Hossa was -17. So Hossa changed overnight into a terrible player who couldn't play defense, right? Or could it be that +/- doesn't tell me a damn thing about his play?

Patrice Bergeon, heh. In his four first years in the league, Boston made the playoffs in his rookie year and then missed the next two years & Bergeron was injured for nearly all of the year after that. Anyway, Boston had bad to mediocre teams those four years. Bergeron's +/- during those four seasons? -18.

+/- tells me nothing when it comes to a player. Zero, zilch, nada.

Total useless stat

Re: Habs News & Notes: 2014-15 Season

Last thing on +/-...

Pacioretty's the team leader on the team at +11. Second on the team? The forum whipping boy, DD.

Useless stat.

Re: Habs News & Notes: 2014-15 Season

So you're telling me that great players who played their whole careers on good teams are on the ice when their teams score goals more often than when their team gets scored on?

I never knew that. I never knew that good players scored a lot and weren't on the ice for goals. Thankfully, +/- is there to help and educate me.

I guess that Scott Stevens a +377 is 3 times the d-man Scott Niedermayer is too.

Also, John Tavares is a career -46. And he plays for the Islanders. Steve Stamkos, career +1. And he plays for Tampa Bay. Taylor Hall, career -18. Plays for Edmonton. COINCIDENCE ?!?!

Sarcasm aside, those +/- stats still tell me nothing.

Dude i never said that .Don't invent things . I just said is an indication .You don't want give a shit about it is your choice ..

Re: Habs News & Notes: 2014-15 Season

Well no... goals and assists are actually a result of a play made by the player. +/- can be a result of the player... but it can also have nothing to do with the player at all.

LOL! You are funny dude . You are comparing apple with Orange . Yes goals and assists are real indication to sign /judge a player but believe me GM pay attention to +- ,Corsi , etc when they want sign a player I don't say is right or wrong ...

Even goals and assists for short period of time can give you not a real indication about a player . A player can work his ass off ,hit the bar ,goalies play over his head and doesn't manage to get as much as goals he is supposed to . Does that make him a bad player ? Eventually good players find a way to score and assist even if they struggle for while .

Again, +/- isn't completely useless, it's just highly flawed. There are better metrics to use though.

Actually DD is very sound defensively that's a big reason Therrien has no issues giving him good ice time despite a slow offensive production

Re: Habs News & Notes: 2014-15 Season

ppl still do that?
I don't pay much attention to that number or any number other tham wins for that matter, but why is goals for and against useless but shots for an against is now considered a Delphi Oracle stat?

GAA is useless cause some goalies face 20 shots a game and others face 40 shots a game. SV% obviously takes that into account.

Which is why wins is also a terrible goalie stat. Wins are purely a team stat.

???

Are we talking about the same DD who is the fourth center option on the PK? The same DD who gets virtually no defensive zone starts, while getting the most offensive zone starts? The same DD who centers this team's first line that includes its best goal scorer?

DD is a lot of things. Very sound defensively, though? No. He's okay at best defensively.

Stats are like food. There is no bad food, as long as you eat it in moderation. Some foods require more moderation.
