The Training Camp Thread

Did Ronnie say Foegele elected not to sign yet or did the Canes decide not to sign him yet?

I don't know, I didn't hear the interview. I was relaying what the David Glenn Show tweeted. I hope it's the latter rather than the former. Francis hasn't been shy about signing guys that still have junior eligibility...Roy, Gauthier, among others.

Klas Dahlbeck also adds another wrinkle to this. If we give him a one year extension at any point this year he already covers our DMan expansion draft requirement. There is your 'plan B' if Ryan Murphy can't get 35 games played this year due to injury, suckage, or being beaten out by other players. Yes I would say that puts a fork in McKeown starting the season with the Canes...you can add him to the 'sent to Charlotte' list.

That also creates another issue to be resolved. We have 5 NHL DMen with one way contracts now (Hainsey, Faulk, Murphy, Nakladal and Dahlbeck) and the 3 kids with entry level deals (Hanifin, Slavin, Pesce). When Murphy is ready to come back something has to give because we have 14 forwards at the moment. 8 DMen would be one too many.

If you are wondering what Klas Dahlbeck brings if he actually gets to play for us...his 178 hits (in 71 games) last season would have been first on the Canes. Jordan Staal paced the Canes with 165 hits in 82 games.

Personally, I'm hoping that Dahlbeck puts a fork in Murphy's time in Carolina full stop. I like that guy. He's a Wallin-type Swede who doesn't yield ground easily and battles well in the corners. Extend him and you don't need Murphy at all. Let him hang out down in Charlotte and bring him up for injury relief or if you run sort of right siders for whatever reason. Yeah, yeah ... his contract. I trump that with his crappy level of play.

And I'm fine with McKeown joining Fleury in learning the trade from Ulfie down in the A. Good teacher. good place for them. I'm telling ya ... we dodged a million bullets playing 3 out and out rookies on the big club last year. The last thing we need right now is two more. Let 'em actually figure things out in pro hockey in the minors in the traditional manner.

Different subject, so my apologies for asking: For those N&O subscribers, did you receive a copy of the 8-page segment dedicated to the Hurricanes in Monday's paper? I got Monday's paper, but it didn't have it included (even though the previous editions were saying it would sent out on Monday). Nor did today's paper.

With all the problems I've had with this poor excuse for a newspaper, one would think that Mick McGeough is running their operations now.

I don't get the hard copy anymore but I am a digital subscriber. It was and I think still is available on their website ... albeit short on the full page graphic stuff they typically add to the actual content.

I know they are having printing and distribution issues right now, both storm related and otherwise.

Thanks, JB!

Peters just announced that 2 permanent A's this year-- Staal and Faulk. Skinner wears an A at home and Rask gets the A on the road-- except when they're in TO and then Skinner gets to wear the A. Not looking to have a C this year because don't want to burden anyone. Want the members of the team to step up.

No insert in my Monday home delivery and I was texting my carrier trying to chase down a copy.

But if they flat didn't put it out yet, after all that hype, and failed to say anything about it...

I mean, it's not like they don't have my email address. :frown2:

I had Skinner as a dark horse because he's King of the Kids. Rask is a surprise.

I had the big three, but Rask is the pleasant surprise to me, too.

When Coach said there would be four during the Canes Corner show, I thought the fourth would be Hainsey.

Good to hear there's more than meets the eye to Mr. Rask.

Can't tell the players without a program....this season especially. It's going to take me a few games to learn the numbers and names!

This paper is driving me nuts. No delivery today - due to "late press", according to the recorded message. Late press? I mean, it seems you can't get squat for sports coverage for games that end after 8:00 pm. And of course, there is no way to contact anyone who will fix these problems. Right now, everything is bad about this rag.

It's been like that for me for a couple of seasons now. Used to be able to tell who was who just by their skating and which line was out. Not anymore- rookies, trades, waiver wire signings, free agents, etc.

On a side note, I'm guessing Raffi Torres wasn't offfered a contract? Haven't heard much about him...

I'm glad and assumed as such, but with as much drama he stirred up coming in, went out with a whimper...

Some other wild and wacky training camp and PTO stories yesterday. Our old friend Kris Versteeg opted-out of his Oilers PTO to skip across Alberta to sign a one year deal with the rival Flames...these two teams open the Oilers new building tonight!

Nathen Gerbe refused his AHL demotion with the Rangers and instead had a deal in Switzerland waiting for him.

Devin Setoguchi returning from a bout of alcoholism, earned a one year deal with the Kings, good on him!!!

I had read that Versteeg had signed with the Flames... now I am wondering if there was anything to that. I mean, the Oilers with all their depth... then the Flames with their own young neucleus. Anyway, wish him well. And good on Devon and Nathan too, respectively

Supposedly, the Oilers wanted him to accept a reduced/part-time role and he wants to be a full time player, or at least have that opportunity. I don't know if it was a money issue, the Flames contract is 1 year/$950k.

I've gotten the impression that Rask and Nestrasil are the leaders among the European players. They're the ones the younger guys lean on for logistical help when they're new in town and the ones who sort of take the lead otherwise. Nesty has a reduced role due to his recovery from surgery, but it's good to see the staff recognize Rask for his work and for the respect he's earned.

Yeah, good to see him battle back. I do wish he landed somewhere other than LA though. That team has had more than their fare share of substance abuse issues and rumors over the last 5 years or so. Not sure that's the most stable dressing room.

Thought the same thing (L.A. environment)

But I guess the old saying about running from your problems won't solve em, in the end may apply. Still, a change of scenery does wonders to propelling any change
