TML? More like FML, amirite? Yet Another Off Season Thread

This series proved that they are very close. Very close. But there are still pieces missing.

At the least need a goalie and a better 6th forward than Kerfoot. Ideally Kampf is your 4th line center.

I think kampf is a good 3rd line C. A playable 4th line would help.

and please god I never want to watch kerfoot again.

Do they go balls deep and spend real money on Kuemper? He's the only guy I see out there that has legit stud ability. But he's gonna cost you and they'd need to dump Mrazek and probably roll with a cheap backup to be able to do it.

And he's 32. And may demand term. I don't know what the answer is here but maybe that's it.

I do agree with mbow on the details bit. Leafs can't do what Tampa did in game 7. The defensive shell was quite impressive. Boring as fuck but they executed it perfectly with very few missed assignments from their depth guys all night.

Jacks 30, inconsistent and on the whole decidedly average, and has never been able to stay healthy.

The absolute key though, is when it did break down, Vasi was there to clean it up. We are missing on both. (Yes i know Jack was solid last night, neither goal his fault imo)

Yeah that PP is notoriously inconsistent as shit no matter who runs it. I just think it's too predictable and easy to defend in a seven game series post adjustments. No one time or point shot threat hurts.

And if they want to get tougher it’s not the Nylander they have to replace with “playoff players” . It’s the Kerfoot/Mikheyev/Kase level of the lineup.

also “playoff players” means guys like Cirelli and Colton, not Killorn and Maroon.

Trochek, Rust, Copp are a few names that should be around July.

Anyone open to a spot for Subban if the money was right?

I dont know what to do with the goaltending but I suspect a deal may be there for Varlamov if Lou is looking to make change. That may be the better play over Kuemper who is also Jack like fragile

Yeah Varlamov might be worth their 1st rounder that they saved. If they can dump Mrazek's contract on a team too, that would be great. 1 year at 5 shmil is reasonable for Varly. But then I'd still try to sign Jack or someone of that caliber on the cheap too because Varly can be fragile as well. And going platoon during the season is for the best.

Leafs need to get Spezza working on Gio right away, used car salesman style.

I'd even argue that adding another forward specifically for their PP might be wise. There is a lack of diversity there that allows for easy adjustments and the leafs are incapable of counter adjustments because most of their guys are (very very good) one trick ponies on the PP. Tampas pp was so good because they've got a point shot threat and two great one time threats on the flanks. And those same guys can pass with the best of them too so it keeps things unpredictable for the PK. Leafs have a distributor on the point, a shooter on one flank and a passer on the other. It would be nice if they at least had a one time threat. Matthews ain't it unfortunately. Willy can pass and one time the puck but he's not quite elite at either so even when they're mobile and switch spots it's never quite right.

We've just seen too much of their pp being shut down in the playoffs with multiple coaches now. It would be nice to add someone who can increase the versatility.

Maybe I’m the contrarian a little bit here but I really don’t think this series is anything like our other first round flops. People seem to be really unsold on the Lightning I guess?

The Leafs probably had like a 55% chance at max of winning the series at the beginning. Then our series started being called really tightly and their dynamic PP made mincemeat of our PK while our PP continued to suck ass.

The demotivating thing for me is that unless you win the division you’re getting Tampa or Florida again with probably similar odds.
