Trade Deadline Thread

Kaplan’s thoughts on the Rantanen situation

Now, look at the situation from Rantanen's perspective. He thought he was going to spend his entire career in Colorado and the trade left him completely shell-shocked. Rantanen barely got any time with the Canes before the 4 Nations break. The Finnish winger is a very methodical person, and he's viewing it as a two-step process: Does he want to sign in Raleigh? And if so, what does that contract look like? At the time of the offer, he was still on step one. And now, free agency is just four months away.

Many teams are wondering if Carolina -- never afraid to do the brash and unexpected -- would flip Rantanen, considering how much they gave up to acquire him. If Carolina double-retained, a team could have Rantanen for just over $2 million for the rest of the season. There would be plenty of takers.

However, Rantanen hasn't told Carolina no. If they get any indication he doesn't want to re-sign with them at all, they would recalculate. If it's still up in the air, my gut says the Canes keep Rantanen and bet on themselves -- bet that he'll help them get over the playoff hump, and ultimately decide Carolina is where he wants to play

This is the thing that keeps me from throwing bricks at my TV. The Dundon era of the Hurricanes is one of taking chances. I'm OK with some big misses happening because at least they are trying.

Yep. Trading for Guentzel was a big swing. While we ultimately lost him, we met his number. We lost to a team in a tax free state that could structure the contract to take maximum advantage of it. Of the $63 million total, less than $5 million will be subject to state income taxes.

The Panthers pick up goalie Vitek Vanacek from the Sharks for minor league forward Patrick Giles. Vanacek will be a UFA after the season. After sending Spencer Knight to Chicago in the Seth Jones trade, they needed a backup for Bob and don’t trust Chris Driedger.

Vanacek is not good
To think that Chris Driedger was once a highly sought after goalie after his great 35 games over 2 season stretch for Florida a while back. At least he got himself paid before reverting to actual form. GM Ron Francis....better let the assistant GM make the decisions on which goalies to give a contract to.

You pretty much never can tell with most goalies what is real and what is just a heater.

It would be tight, but if Seattle is retaining 50%, Tampa can add both Bjorkstrand and Gourde without trading any roster player of significance.

It’s done. Seattle retained 50% on Gourde and Detroit was involved as a 3rd party. Tampa gets Gourde and a 2026 5th rounder. Seattle gets 1st rounders in 2026 and 2027 and Toronto’s 2nd rounder this year. They also get Michael Eyssimont.

The first rounders that Seattle got are top 10 protected, not that it should be an issue with the Bolts. If either pick falls into the top 10, the pick slides to 2028. If both fall into, the picks are in 2028 and 2029. Seattle also picks up a 3rd rounder if the pick slides.

Detroit got a 5th round pick from Tampa for picking up part of Gourde’s salary.

Got it, so double retained Gourde but full boat on Bjorkstrand.

With Atkinson and Logan Brown clearing waivers and buried in the minors, Michael Eyssimont included in the trade, and the cap room they had banked this year, TB now has $819k in 'Deadline cap space' left over (aka not much).

Those 1st round picks don't matter to Tampa, they somehow manage just fine without picking in the first round year after year.

I’m not sure which team is the buyer and which is the seller. Friedman says the Pens are sending Michael Bunting to Nashville with Luke Schenn and Tommy Novak part of the return. Neither team will make the playoffs, the Pens are only 4 points ahead of the Slugs, for last in the East and the Slugs have 4 games in hand. Nashville is 16 points out of the 2nd Wild Card in the West.

Edit: Nashville also gets a 2026 4th rounder

Schenn looks like the guy in this that probably gets flipped again by Friday. Dubas will try and turn that asset into something he wants from another team at a higher price.

He’s going to have lots of chances to rebuild his team all summer with all that cap space by the sounds of things…

The Ducks send dman Brian Dumoulin to the Devils for a 2025 2nd rounder and the signing rights to Wing Herman Traff, who is playing for HV71 in Sweden. The Ducks are retaining half of Dumoulin’s cap hit, he’s a UFA after the season.

Panthers get Nico Sturm and a 2027 7th round pick from the Sharks for a 2026 4th rounder. He has 7 goals, 6 assists in 47 games.

In waiver action to clear the space for these deadline moves...all three guys from yesterday on waivers were claimed. The Preds claimed Vrana and Oesterle, and the Jackets claimed Fischer.

Ryan Reaves is on waivers today...and Riley Stillman is also on waivers.
