Now, look at the situation from Rantanen's perspective. He thought he was going to spend his entire career in Colorado and the trade left him completely shell-shocked. Rantanen barely got any time with the Canes before the 4 Nations break. The Finnish winger is a very methodical person, and he's viewing it as a two-step process: Does he want to sign in Raleigh? And if so, what does that contract look like? At the time of the offer, he was still on step one. And now, free agency is just four months away.
Many teams are wondering if Carolina -- never afraid to do the brash and unexpected -- would flip Rantanen, considering how much they gave up to acquire him. If Carolina double-retained, a team could have Rantanen for just over $2 million for the rest of the season. There would be plenty of takers.
However, Rantanen hasn't told Carolina no. If they get any indication he doesn't want to re-sign with them at all, they would recalculate. If it's still up in the air, my gut says the Canes keep Rantanen and bet on themselves -- bet that he'll help them get over the playoff hump, and ultimately decide Carolina is where he wants to play
This is the thing that keeps me from throwing bricks at my TV. The Dundon era of the Hurricanes is one of taking chances. I'm OK with some big misses happening because at least they are trying.the Canes keep Rantanen and bet on themselves -- bet that he'll help them get over the playoff hump
Yep. Trading for Guentzel was a big swing. While we ultimately lost him, we met his number. We lost to a team in a tax free state that could structure the contract to take maximum advantage of it. Of the $63 million total, less than $5 million will be subject to state income taxes. This is the thing that keeps me from throwing bricks at my TV. To think that Chris Driedger was once a highly sought after goalie after his great 35 games over 2 season stretch for Florida a while back. At least he got himself paid before reverting to actual form. GM Ron Francis....better let the assistant GM make the decisions on which goalies to give a contract to.Vanacek is not good
It’s done. Seattle retained 50% on Gourde and Detroit was involved as a 3rd party. Tampa gets Gourde and a 2026 5th rounder. Seattle gets 1st rounders in 2026 and 2027 and Toronto’s 2nd rounder this year. They also get Michael Eyssimont. It would be tight, but if Seattle is retaining 50%, Tampa can add both Bjorkstrand and Gourde without trading any roster player of significance.
Schenn looks like the guy in this that probably gets flipped again by Friday. Dubas will try and turn that asset into something he wants from another team at a higher price.I’m not sure which team is the buyer and which is the seller. Friedman says the Pens are sending Michael Bunting to Nashville with Luke Schenn and Tommy Novak part of the return. Neither team will make the playoffs, the Pens are only 4 points ahead of the Slugs, for last in the East and the Slugs have 4 games in hand. Nashville is 16 points out of the 2nd Wild Card in the West.
Edit: Nashville also gets a 2026 4th rounder
He’s going to have lots of chances to rebuild his team all summer with all that cap space by the sounds of things…This is the thing that keeps me from throwing bricks at my TV.
