OT: World Politics

Venezuelan security forces on Sunday blocked opposition leader Juan Guaidó from a special session of the National Assembly, where he was expected to be reelected as the legislature's leader — an apparent bid by President Nicolás Maduro to outmaneuver the man who has staked a rival claim to the presidency.

In Guaidó's absence, supporters of Maduro elected one of their own to head the body. Hours later, however, a majority of National Assembly lawmakers met in emergency session elsewhere, reelecting Guaidó and accusing Maduro of attempting a "parliamentary coup."

Kind of surprising. After a couple of days of constant denials, they're actually admitting it:

So I'm playing catch up this morning as it has been a terrible week and I really had no time to delve into this shooting down of the Ukraine Airliner.

I read that they're saying it was human error and someone thought that the airliner was a cruise missile?

Umm, how can an object ascending from Tehran be a cruise missile? If anything it would be descending or at best on a trajectory that modern radar systems could easily analyze as originating from Tehran airspace. I find this claim dubious at best.

Russia comes out and says "Tehran apologized, further actions won't bring people back, the case should be closed"?

Yeah, fuck right off with that noise.

The one thing I am having trouble discerning through conflicting reports is why there were so many Canadians on the flight in the first place. Most articles say it was bound for Kiev. I did see one report that Kiev was the stop over before continuing on to Canada, can anyone confirm this for me?

What a bloody mess. It's unconscionable. It further proves that the world simply cannot allow this regime to acquire a nuclear weapon, they are too incompetent and too full of hatred to even be allowed to come close to one. Their people need to finally rise up. Yes people will die in a revolution but look at what's happening over there, people are dying daily anyway. The sane Iranians need to seize their country back.

I agree, both in terms of competency and ideology.

Funny thing, there was already a nuclear deal in place, yet this US government chose to renege on its terms.

As far as people rising up is concerned, the surest path is through global economic integration. Sanctions only serve to entrench the control of the IRG, who control the levers of power (like the KGB) and underpins a corrupt kleptocracy. It is market forces, investment and meaningful property rights that will undermine their corrupt power.

The nuclear agreement has a sunset clause anyway and Iran was cheating. The Regime needs to go and it’s highly preferable that the Iranian people do it themselves. Economic sanctions will continue to apply pressure for them to do so but incidents like this, where they can’t lie their way out of it to their people, act as a catalyst. Saving face is important in their culture and the Mullahs messed up badly.

Sure they weren’t.

Even if that’s true, the agreement had a full sunset clause. You can cling to that all you want, the only real solution is the regime going bye bye.

Sure they weren’t.

Well if Netanyahu says so...

The stolen documents contain no revelations about recent nuclear activity and no proof that Iran has violated the 2015 nuclear accord it reached with the United States and five other global powers. U.S. officials had long known of Iran’s pre-2004 nuclear weapons research, which the Obama administration cited explicitly in prodding Iran to accept the historic deal limiting its ability to make enriched uranium and placing its nuclear facilities under intensive international oversight.

Netanyahu's dog and pony show, shockingly, didn't line up with the evidence that was actually presented. Shockingly.

Or extending the deal that was clearly working.

Making deals with mass murderers like Kim Jong and Khamenei. It’s amazing how people play fast and loose with their morals.

Why stop there though? The Saudi's, most American administrations, the Russians, etc, etc, etc. If we're playing by a strict moral code here, it's basically the Canadians and the Scandinavians dutch ruddering each other in a circle, no? Even we can't make eye contact with each other while we do it, we just win by process of elimination largely due to lack of capacity.

I’m no fan of the Saudis. Duplicitous pricks.

The point still stands though. You can’t keep making deals with unscrupulous people that believe you should either bow or die.

Just my take on it.
