Leafs acquire Frederik Anderson from Ducks

This is pretty scary.

I very cautiously liked it when I heard the news, but the more I read through this thread I'm getting queasy.

Especially with that 5 year deal. What the hell?

I almost feel like Shanahan may have just failed to do exactly what he said has proven impossible for Leafs managers to do - stick with the rebuild plan. Seems like he could've gotten a free agent bargain bin guy to platoon or take over from Bernier, and used the pick to draft Carter Hart or some other goalie stud. This feels very rushed, and the contract is nuts.

They must be absolutely certain in their minds that Anderson is a clear cut #1. If he turns out to be, nice deal. If not, disastrous. It'll just be Bernier all over again, but for more money and for 4 extra years.

Not a big fan of this move. Hope to be surprised. Strikes me as a lot to give up for a middling and unproven talent, never mind the contract.

It's kind of terrifying how much this is giving me flashbacks to the Raycroft & Toskala deals. Pay a steep price to acquire an unproven backup/platoon goalie, and then immediately turn around and give him a hefty contract extension. Though they took it a step even further by giving him five years instead of three.

This is a massive gamble all around, and I really don't like it. The only thing keeping me from just really shitting all over this is the confidence I've got in our management group. I sure as **** they know something we don't, and that they're right on this.

And the Leafs are the only team that would be interested and the cost would be less right?

I feel like people here over-estimate their knowledge on player values when evaluating these types of players.

I didn't say that. I'd rather pay more for a high end goalie, than pay a ton for an average one. IMO on goalies you spend for the top ones. You can find average goaltending easily.

Look at Lou's trade for Schneider. He had to give up a top 10 pick. But he got the best young goalie in the league. It was worth it.

get the f*ck out of here with this reimer bullshit.

F*cking guy killing the Andersen buzz. Get over it.

I'm stoked. I trust Lou and co to find our goalie. Looks like they have.

you have an buzz from this trade? yikes.

He will be around the 16th highest goaltender cap hit

Yeah, exactly.

People believe they can get above average goalies for less than this amount. This is the going rate at this point for goalies of Anderson's talent and track record. And if there are goalies cheaper than this, they are likely just finishing out a contract that they have just recently began to outplay. Either way, they eventually get paid as well and it will usually be for more than what we just gave for Anderson.

So yeah, it's a gamble, but a gamble that could pay huge dividends to an up and coming team looking to build a winning culture and a stable environment for the large influx of youth that will be welcomed in the coming years. And this in no way means the brass is rushing the rebuild. They have a million picks in the next couple of years and eventually need to turn some of these picks into players.

I agree this does kinda seem premature.

But if they are right about him, he is young enough to be a long term solution.

He has been an above average goalie since breaking into the league three years ago. Vasilevski hasn't proven anything more than Anderson thus far in his career. And Schneider, while highly touted, had not played more than 33 games with the Canucks in any given season before being traded to NJ.

Its also a gamble that could end up with the Leafs stuck with a Reimer/Bernier goalie for 5 years. We can't just look at the potential upside, and ignore the downside here. This was a huge gamble. Andersen isn't even a proven average starter.

It's possible they know Stamkos has no interest in being 30th again, even in year 1.

Getting a goalie could've been vital to landing him

Yeah but Schneider and Vasilevski put up elite numbers for their ages, and Andesen has put up average numbers. Performance is the key here.

Sign Stamkos. Trade for a higher end defender to pair with Rielly and i smell the playoffs.

Andersen has played good everywhere he's been. SHL, AHL, NHL, NHL playoffs.

I don't understand the hurt feelings some have here. Is it that one of our thousand of mystery boxes(picks) got traded? 30th overall? San Jose 2nd rounder next year? you guys kidding right?

5.5 million puts him at 16th overall in terms of cap hit for goalies. And its not even confirmed yet to be 5.5.

He has been better than Reimer and Bernier. Let's not pump the Recency Bias and assume every move we make needs to be compared to recent history, even though different players/circumstances are involved.

Yeah, for all the sky is falling, doom and gloom in this thread......if they're right, they just got a franchise guy for the next 5 years of his prime on a salary that only makes him the 15th highest paid goalie in AAV.

But he hasn't been better than Reimer and Bernier. He has been the same. He put up average numbers as a platoon starter. He never had a year as good as Bernier had two years ago. This has nothing to do with recency bias, and everything to do with Andersen's performance.

Yikes. I first saw what we paid to get Andersen, and I wasn't thrilled, at all.

Then, I saw the contract we gave him. ****.

I really hope Lou & Co are right, cause this is one hell of a gamble. And you can count me a skeptic. Would love to be proven wrong, but I really don't think Andersen is someone you want to be giving a 5/25+ contract to. Ugh.
