The ****ing Offseason Thread - 2016

Nothing concrete yet, but TSN reporter Frank Seravalli is reporting that the Leafs have told Joffrey Lupul that he is not fit to play, and will begin the season on their injured reserve list:

Lupul returned to Toronto from his off-season home on Sept. 13. Sometime during the last week, it’s believed Lupul underwent a physical examination by Maple Leaf doctors and indications are Lupul was notified he is unfit to play and will be placed on the injured reserve list to begin the season.

Lupul was asked to comment via text message Wednesday and replied he will address the media on Thursday. He has not skated with the group of Maple Leafs informally preparing for training camp daily at the MasterCard Centre.

The Maple Leafs declined comment on Wednesday. A press release from the team said its training camp roster will be released Thursday.

If Lupul's not OK with that, he can seek a second medical opinion, and then let the battle begin.

I was about to post that. I don't doubt Lupul isn't fit, but he's going to fight it anyway. I hope the Leafs management team is prepared.

Because of the whole "Lou the Godfather" thing. The reality is Lupul has basically been hurt for 6-7 years now and just had the same procedure that ended Robidas career. That guys body was never going to hold up into his mid-30s in NHL shape.

Why does everyone think he's going to fight it exactly?
I don't really see the upside for him. If he gets a doctor to declare him fit and forces the Leafs to take him off LTIR, then what? They probably waive him and he collects his paycheque while riding buses and mostly watching Marlies games from the press box.

Because of the whole "Lou the Godfather" thing. The reality is Lupul has basically been hurt for 4 years now and just had the same procedure that ended Robidas career.

And Robidas is 39 with sports hernia and knee injuries and two broken legs in the last couple of years but the league is going to "investigate" because people will be "asking questions". I think it's the godfather reputation too because people are letting their imaginations run wild here.

They're both hurt. Lupul's always hurt, there's nothing suspicious about it at all.

Agreed there's nothing suspicious about the move. But Lupul's been on record of saying he's ready to play and can play. Same thing that Cowen said. I think he's going to fight it on principle because there's still a small possibility that he can make more money after this season before he retires.

He's said he's ready to play? Where was this?

The last thing I heard from him was that he's "playing a waiting game and trying to get healthy". That was June.

He's said he's ready to play? Where was this?

He had a short chat with one of the reporters on Twitter -- I'm searching for it now. He's mentioned coming back to get healthy enough to play on June 25, 2016 according to Google, so I know it was in between then and before September 1st.

There are other references to Lupul saying he's healthy, but no one concrete. Glad you asked because noe I wonder if I mixed him up with JVR or someone else. But my memory is saying g it was Lupil.

He's talking to the media tomorrow, so we will find out for sure.

It only seems to be the bloggers who think Lupul being injured is highly suspicious for some reason.

The most recent concrete update we've gotten about Lupul was this Steve Simmons piece back in June:

I’m playing the waiting game,” Lupul said Saturday from New York. “I’m trying to get healthy. That’s my focus right now.

I haven’t heard anything (from the Leafs). I really can’t tell you anything. I’m just playing the waiting game now.

It’s frustrating,” Lupul said of his situation and his constant battle with injuries. “I still want to play hockey. I still think I’m a hockey player.

There's been no new information since then, until Frank Seravalli's article today.

I'd be genuinely surprised if Lupul suggested tomorrow that he's perfectly healthy and he's being held back by Leaf doctors but I think that's what certain bloggers are expecting - a controversy.
