Habs Acquire Joel Edmundson

This Alzner contract is the killer. My goodness is it ever bad. Molson must be pissed they wasted almost $25M on nothing. NTC to boot.

Ferraro and Aaron Ward have mentioned based on conversations with players - that players may go to the union and ask for a one time buyout option to be instituted into present CBA to allow team to have more flexibility prior to start of next season.

That would be so amazing!

What needs to happen is team options on long term contacts so they can rid themselves on Alzners

Teams need some mechanism in place for flexibility

Advanced stats aren't that important IMO

Plenty of players with great stats but woudnt want them on a beer league team

The main issue is fit , contract , and what does he bring to table to help the team
Wouldn’t go that far....but all data is about context not stand-alone especially for a dynamic sport like hockey with too many variables

Bingo, too many moving parts

Leon is terrible 5/5 stats wise …..who wouldn't take him

Spreadsheets don't win games , teams put way too much emphasis on numbers

Should be based on team stats and major fluctuations in play

Easier to identify that PDO is unsustainable , or a team improves 20 points but their powerplay was 60% or had a team of career years

To say that Joel was good in one area and shit in 2 others and transferring to Montreal and making a projection is just a gamble

There is some substance that comes out of this interview. Nothing earth-shattering but things that are reassuring, if true.

As expected -- Suzuki, KK and Price being untouchables. Romanov is also an untouchable. The untouchable label on Price was even extended to the expansion draft -- so there goes the idea about how Price could be moved to Seattle.

Also, when asked what was missing on the Habs, Bergevin said:

«J’aimerais amener un gars avec un gros gabarit, capable de produire offensivement. Ce serait l’idéal. Encore là, ce joueur est-il disponible? Les équipes ne s’en débarrassent pas.» «Je regarde ça au quotidien.»

TRANSLATION: "I'd like to add a big body who can generate offense. That would be ideal. Again, is that player available? Teams don't tend to get rid of this type of player. I'm looking at it daily." I don’t ever recall MB ever being that specific about a need/want - “big body who can generate offense”

Who knows what he has going now, maybe he was just lowering expectations so his next move could surprise. Or maybe not...

He thinking Laine? I hope not. I don't think that kid will ever reach his potential consistently, we'd only see flashes.

Yeah but it would help other teams far more than the Habs.

Now you're comparing Edmundson to Draisaitl? Batshit.

Considering the D partners Edmundson (hereafter known as JE) has had in St. Louis and Carolina I think the numbers speak volumes. He was subpar with very good partners. Better partners than he will have with the Habs.

Edmundson is very good on the PK - an aspect of the game the Habs have been terrible at for a couple of years.

Bergevin wants his D to wear down opposing teams. It's pretty obvious.
If there is a condensed schedule next season, probability would state bigger players would be able to absorb the wear & tear (of 4-games in 3-nights) of that grueling schedule moreso than smaller players. Playing G and D are difficult enough, now add the rigor of the schedule...

Also another reason to load up on D to rotate players.

Not comparing at all

Reference is simply that some players have bad numbers and are highly sought after

Others are analytic darlings like Pouliot and get bounced from team to team

Did Joel play big minutes with Faulk , Hamilton , Pietro or Parrayko ?

and Pesce. yes. He had great partners and subpar numbers. Doesn't bode well.

Petry is RHD, Edmundson LHD. I don't see it.
FWIW, Edmundson is a natural LD, but he spent a huge chunk of last season playing the right side for Carolina. He's underwhelming on his weak side, but he can hold down the fort if needed. I mean, he's not overwhelming on his strong side, but ... you get the point. He's competent.

To be fair to Edmundson he also spent a lot of time on his off side trying to prop up Gardiner for Carolina. Gardiner was ... umm ... awful. When he played on the right it was generally with Pesce (very good) or Fleury (playing HIS off side, not especially well) or Van Reimsdyk (equally not great)
