The Fucking Offseason Thread - Why bother waiting?

To me I just thought McCann is an upgrade on Kerfoot and for slightly cheaper so I was enthusiastic yesterday.

McCann is either a huge improvement on Kerfoot, or a good Hyman replacement. We started last season with Hyman-Thornton-Vesey as our top 3 LW's....we kind of fucking need help there.

I think what's bothering people is that Dubas clearly likes Holl, Kerfoot, and Dermott more than they do.

This is definitely part of it for me. I’m not really much of a fan of Dermott at this point. Certainly not to the point where I think it’s worth trading prospects to lessen the chance he’ll get picked.

And not only do I think it’s not worth spending assets to protect Kerfoot, I just flat out want him gone. If he’s back next year, I’ll be disappointed.

Holl, on the other hand, I do like.

I agree...I think he is an upgrade as well, but if he's picked, I see the fact that we just lost hallender and a 7th.
With the majority of money owed to kerfoot paid already, there are plenty of cheap teams who would want him for the cap hit but low actual money

An upgrade? Maybe, probably. But a HUUUUGE improvement? C'mon man.

Saw this earlier. Seems to point that way.

Yeah, Innefective Math had more or less the same thing, McCann is better at generating "shootiness" and less apocalyptic in his own end, seems like a decent replacement.

While technically true, I think this misses the point. McCann immediately became our runaway 5th best forward. He's closer to being as good as the bottom end of our big 4 (JT & Nylander) than he is to being as good as our depth guys and we got him in the exact type of situations that we're supposed to be exploiting as the alleged smart kids. Expansion draft with a bunch of teams poorly evaluating their internal player pool and making dumb mistakes. Instead we're sitting here exposing this good player of need that we just got for a steal of a price so that we can protect a good but just good #4 RHD who is replaceable internally.

There's a bunch of people really high on Conor Garland here, call him a core piece, etc...okay cool

Last 2 years:

McCann(25yrs 1yr 2.9M): 2.01 P/60, 51.5 CF%, 61.3 GF%, 52.3 xGF%
Garland(25yrs RFA): 2.19 P/60 51.4 CF%, 56.4 GF%, 52.8 xGF%

Very, very similar overall impacts the last 2 years with Garland having the edge in 5v5 production, but still fairly close. Keep in mind also that McCann appears to be at minimum a decent centre and played his best this year while covering for Malkin.

So I'm choked that we went out and stole a player of need from Pittsburgh because they made a dumb decision at the expansion draft, only to turn around probably lose him (he's the best player we're leaving available, and by a lot) so that we can protect Holl, who is entirely replaceable.

McCann is really good. Kerfoot isn't.

I think people are forgetting how kind of bad Kerfoot was for most of the year. He had a nice playoff series against Montreal and that's great, but he really wasn't very good this year. One of our worst forwards in overall impact despite getting pretty soft usage.

Muzzin-Holl has been one of the better top matchup pairs in the league since they were pit together.

And that's even assuming that they managed to properly take into account their wildly different quality of Competition level.

Look at Holl's QOC vs Dermott 👀

Same as their QoT.

Dermott has mostly played with scrubs on our bottom pair, Holl with Muzzin and Muzzin is real gud.

That's one of the reasons I'm comfortable with exposing Holl, I'm comfortable that one of Dermott, Sandin, or Timmy will look just fine next to Muzzin, or put Brodie next to Muzzin as a shut down pair and let Rielly make one of them look good in semi sheltered minutes.

McCann is good. If he sneaks through and Seattle takes someone else that is great.

But losing Hallinder in the expansion draft is fine.

And Holl is the Leafs only good RHD. They are still trying to win this year.
