The Fucking Offseason Thread - Why bother waiting?

I think you guys are overlooking the apparent difficulty in finding good complementary forwards.

We signed like 5 of these bargain basement guys last year and none of them were good enough. Thornton, Simmonds, Vesey, GForce (though he was good enough that I'd like to see him back), Boyd, and whoever else I'm forgetting.

Kerf is a lot better than these guys. Maybe the market this offseason yields more comparable players willing to play for less and provide roughly the same results, but I'm skeptical. We need guys who are capable, who can skate fast, who have some offensive ability, and can play both ends of the ice. Kerf is better than everyone is giving him credit for here, and we're going to be in tough to replace him and Hyman from the castoff pile - another reason why I'd be bummed to see McCann plucked.
I like Kerfoot. losing him is a loss no doubt. We can't lose depth that's quality like him and has great speed. The bargain guys are very hit and miss. can't fill an entire roster with it.

Last year they could only offer players $900k, so they didn't get any of their top targets (other than simmonds). There were rumours they went hard after Granlund, but he signed for $3.5, so the best they could do was Vesey and Boyd.

They have a lot more cap space this year to work with. And there are a ton of good wingers (Landeskog, Hyman, Tatar, Schwartz, Granlund, Saad, Hall, Parise, etc.)

If I’m reading cap friendly right we have 6.4 million available at the moment. If they take Kerfoot that takes us to close to 10 but needing to find a replacement for him as well as another goalie and forward.

That’s tight. We def need to find some bargains. Not sure we’ll have enough money for a Schwartz, Hoffman, Tatar type. Maybe one.

Yeah, they are likely losing Kerfoot or McCann which brings them back to $9.5 - $10 mill in cap space.

They have plenty of room to spend on one forward (up to $5 mill - a guy like Tatar, Schwartz, Granlund, Krejci, Bonino, Danault etc) a goalie ($3 mill) and a couple of Vesey/Bogosian bargain big guys that get squeezed out the market (Gally, Parise, Palmieri etc). They could even go 2 $3ish million forwards depending (Granlund and Bonino).

If they really wanted to they could spend on Landeskog/Hyman and cheap out on the goalie. They have enough room.

Going to be more than a few guys getting squeezed down to the 2-3 mil range. I cant see tatar getting more than $2MM on a 1 year deal.

Keeping Muzzin is a mistake. We could really use that cap.

Muzzin’s a tough call. He’s really fucking good, we have no one who can capably replace him internally, and it’s be really tough to sign or acquire a replacement.

On the other hand, it’s been two years in a row where he hasn’t been able to make it out of the first round without suffering a long-term injury.

Hyman --> McCann/$3.0-3.5m replacement
Galy/Vesey - -> $3.0-3.5m replacement
Thornton -> Robertson/$1m replacement

Bogosian --> Sandin/Lilly/$1m replacement

Andersen --> $3.0-3.5m replacement

Trading Muzzin creates cap space, but it also opens up a huge hole.

I think the only way you can move him is when you already have the replacement/better use of the cap space in your pocket (e.g. Vegas moving Schmidt after signing Pietro).

So they knew. They knew Seattle would take kerfoot and they’d walk away with Dermott, McCann, Holl, IMO.

or maybe seattle prepped their test names based on what they expected to see, before the leafs made that last minute trade.
