No worse, for sure ... although Smith's best games are a bit over Chatfield's head. You only get that maybe one game out of ten though.

Yeah, a 2nd and a legit prospect sounds about right. Helleson doesn't look like anything super special but he's a quality prospect (he won the defensive defenseman of the year in Hockey East) and the Ducks' prospect pool is shy on D. Translate the price for Carolina and you'd be talking Scott Morrow and a 2nd. I'm not 100% sure I'd have pulled that trigger for Manson, to be honest.
Canes would have had to move someone too, or find a 3rd party. Even with Ducks retaining half, that exceeds the approximate $1.8 million the Canes have available.

I've met Don a couple of times at those kinds of events and actually chatted with him for a minute on the concourse before the Seattle game. He is either one of the nicest guys on the planet or he's one heck of an actor.

Don seems to be a genuine good guy. Every time I've interacted with him he has given me positive vibes.
Just a day after he was named GM my wife and I were at the arena for a select a seat event. We were actually going for a walk around the inside of a mostly empty arena and we ran across Don hanging out. He was on his cell phone at the time. When he saw us I heard him say "I have to go" he walked right over to us, introduced himself, asked how the select a seat event went. I congratulated him on being named GM. That has always stuck with me that he stopped a phone call just to come over and say hi to us.
The first time we met Don was at Carolina Ale House in Cary for a watch party. Don was there and went to each table to introduce himself. I remember him coming over to our table just as Scott Darling allowed another bad goal in what was an eventual loss to the Bruins. Don watched the replay, groaned, and said 'that wasn't good'. It was worth a chuckle at the time and he made my oldest daughter a Don Waddell fan in that moment.

I love how open and engaging Waddell has been at several events I have met him at, always willing to stop and chat and always gracious with the fans. JR was also pretty damn great in that regard so we have been lucky over the years to not have the cold, cannot be bothered types of GM's.
We DID have Francis for a couple of years. He wasn't out there talking to the punters before games, that's for sure.
To be fair, in 2006 our seats were in front of the owners box, so we regularly saw JR while going to and from our seats. The next fall, after the Cup win, my wife and I were walking by him and he stopped us and said “I never had a chance to thank you for your support last year.”
On a personal level, he could be a really good guy. The kind of thing that made me melancholy when he left, because I felt a bit bad about knowing it was past time.
