TML? More like FML, amirite? Yet Another Off Season Thread

I like Presto's idea that I read in one of these threads. Keep Sandin and Liljegren on the roster and if we need to upgrade the D we do it at the deadline. For me, I've seen enough to give Liljegren a longer term deal at this point to save some cash. I would definitely bridge Sandin though, he's decent but doesn't really fit into what we need with our D group.

Jack is a backup. a tandem starter at best. And not even a reliable and consistent one. Let's not even talk about the season, the rebound on Paul's goal is not something that can happen in a game 7. not if you're serious about winning. when the margin for error is so thin, it can't be your guy that always makes the mistake.

hopefully after watching him all season and playoff management realizes that.

my offer is sub 3 million and the backup role next year, assuming we're ditching Mrazek's contract for the needed space.

he probably won't take that, and to that I say bon voyage Jack. The Leafs have a solid defence and a strong team in front of him. there is no excuse for the regular unscreened undeflected softies. Also in our case we need better than sub .900 goaltending from our starter to get anywhere. I don't think that's an unreasonable ask.
I'm hardly Jack's biggest defender but he made a last second adjustment to kick out a deflection. your expectations I do not think are realistic if you expect your goalie to be able to have excellent rebound control on last second tips.

Now, if you wanted to get pissed at Mo for getting beat to the rebound by Paul, I would agree with you

Agreed. And on the second one, it was a dumblefuck play where the puck squeezed past the best dman in history Brodie, and squirted back loose for Paul to take a quick shot from in close. If those were the TWO goals we had to give up, no problem. Nothing from Kuch, Stamkos, Hedman, or their other guys, for most of the series frankly. We scored at least 3 on Vasy in every single game the preceded, but of course we forget how to score more than 1 in the most important game of the year. There's just no getting over the hump.

Until we do. But when?

Jack is another Reimer

Decent tandem goalie. Often injured. Quick to fall in shambles after a bad goal.

We need a clear upgrade.

I’m tired of this board falling in love with mediocre goalies. Dubas failed huge this year in not getting at least another quality goalie to tandem with Jack.

Get us a good fucking goalie.

I'm also pretty surprised by all this Sandin stuff.

The kid plays a very different game than Lilly, but he plays like a seasoned pro. I don't care what the bullcrap stats say, he's going to be very good. Super smooth, super smart, knows how to play D, has great offensive instincts.

Painful that in a series that quickly turned to non-physical for the most part, we didn't insert Lilly and Sandin in place of Babushkin and Holl, to create that extra jump and offense that we ALWAYS need to badly near the end of series. Didn't use it for Game 6, okay, came close, but fuck, use it in Game 7 then? I'd rather lose with Lilly and Sandin in, than with Babushkin in instead of them.

And Jack will still use his all star appearance here to get overpaid. Gotta move on.

As others have mentioned, Brindamour didn't give a fuck about using kids without playoff experience. Keefe made a error there.

Rielly plus for Josi. look at our roster year after year and as much as i love rielly its the one spot we dont measure up to the other contenders

Keefe gone.
Nylander gone.
Sign Engval and Mikey.
See if the islanders will do a Pelech and Varlamov or Sorkin deal with the leafs.
Trade Muzz for futures to use as currency in trade or future project.

The funny thing is, I trust Dubie to figure it out.

He makes some totally inexplicable moves sometimes but they're usually small to no consequence to bury (Simmonds, Clifford), so I don't care about those - except that Keefe likes to play them. He makes an odd move once in a while that I'm not excited about from the get go (Mrazek). And occasionally he'll lose a trade (Kadri). But for the most part, I'm behind him and believe in him.

No doubt he's more frustrated and mystified than all of us combined. You have to chalk some of it up to the quality of the opponent, but TB was very beatable and we had two chances yet again to close them out. If I'm him, I'm looking for that Gary Roberts type now. A guy who refuses to lay down, who hits and plays really big and tough (without being a thug), and who will whip Willy into shape every time he sees him slacking. Off the top of my head, I don't know who that is. But I know Dubie is working on a short list.

I'm positive what he's not working on is Tavares, and I believe he will bring Campbell back without question really (probably views this as a buying opportunity). With Lilly and Sandin knocking, he has to sign one or both to a long term deal (Lilly for sure). He has to drop Babushkin, and has to be thinking of Gio in, and Muzzin out.

I'm not expecting to be surprised by anything. I think the game plan for who leaves is clear, but who replaces them is going to be interesting.

I mean, the only answer I can find right now (I reserve the right to reassess) is that we just need one or two or more fucking lunatics out there. The Darcy Tucker types to launch themselves into an opponent's bench. The greasy cheating bastard who has the other team trying to decapitate them. Need more greasy cheaters.

Yup. I want Matty to play meaner, which he did a lot of during the season and showed flashes of in the series, but aside from that, Marner, Tavares, and Nylander play clean games that align with their physical stature. They need to stay that way. So the core is too nice, but we need to surround it with mean. Bunting is a nice add because he brings that grit and Marchand-ish approach, but he was clearly useless in the playoffs due to whatever injury he had. We need another him, but one that isn't kidding around like Bunting is - someone who actually wants to kill the opponent if they can. We need to get scarier, meaner, more punishing, without going down the unskilled goon path.

In my ball hockey league, there are a few fuckfaces who run you, who slash and check and trip. It's a joke league, really just organized pick up with nothing on the line, so it's ridiculous that they play like that because they do hurt you once in a while. But it's because of that, when I've got the puck and one of them is barreling towards me or chasing me down, as much as I'm thinking about the puck, I'm also concerned about whether they're going to trip me, push me forward while I'm running (which results in a hard fall), collide into me, etc. - ALL of which has happened, many times. It gets into your head and makes you rush, or make a bad play, or fucking pay the price and get hurt for nothing. Basically the Cliffy hit from Game 1.

We need a guy or two who can make clean hits like that, and regularly during a game, that crush the opponent and have them thinking twice about what they're going to do when they're in the vicinity.

Nah that was pretty bad by Jack. 25 ft wrister and he gave himself no chance to stop the rebound. Completely unsquare.
