TML? More like FML, amirite? Yet Another Off Season Thread

Get a goalie. A good goalie. Pay for one. Overpay for one. A guy to outplay the other goalie for once. A guy that won’t fold under pressure. A guy that doesn’t get hurt feelings about letting in a goal.

Problem is, you can get that guy based on his last year's performance, and he'll be a different guy when he plays for you.

That is the nature of the goalie. So why bother.

Ok lets roll it back with Mrazek and Campbell

Why bother
Well no, you don't bring back someone who's obviously shit like Mrazek (unless you have to in a showcase situation so you can get rid of him).

But to go in hard on some goalie, give up 1sts, or sign them to big money deals, no thanks.

Would love it if we had a top goalie who'd steal games on the regular and wouldn't be good only every other year, but I don't know more than a couple of those out there.

The way to get a top goalie is to draft one. To develop him properly, then give him 3 years on the ELC to see if he truly is elite, and then sign him for like 5 years after that. And then reassess when those years are up.

But I still like Jack and am happy to roll with him. Especially if he comes at a discount now.

That was insane

However you just can't compare the two teams in front of those goalies. Dallas isn't Tampa.

I hate to say it, but all this talk of Tampa - they honestly weren't that good. Kuch was always dangerous and Hedman was good, and Vasy had his moments, but there was nothing about them that didn't scream absolutely beatable to me. That's why this is more frustrating than it ought to be. With just a little bit more juice, we could've easily been sitting back right now enjoying putting away the two-time defending champs. None of this talk of Jack or Tavares or Matty or anyone else. Just one less goal allowed in Game 6, or one more/less goal in Game 7 to force an OT.

Imagine how good they'd be with above bottom 10 goaltending.

Jack is a backup. a tandem starter at best. And not even a reliable and consistent one. Let's not even talk about the season, the rebound on Paul's goal is not something that can happen in a game 7. not if you're serious about winning. when the margin for error is so thin, it can't be your guy that always makes the mistake.

hopefully after watching him all season and playoff management realizes that.

my offer is sub 3 million and the backup role next year, assuming we're ditching Mrazek's contract for the needed space.

he probably won't take that, and to that I say bon voyage Jack. The Leafs have a solid defence and a strong team in front of him. there is no excuse for the regular unscreened undeflected softies. Also in our case we need better than sub .900 goaltending from our starter to get anywhere. I don't think that's an unreasonable ask.

And Oettinger was awesome, way way better than Vasy, against an attack that was way way better than the Leafs in Game 7.
