OT: The News Thread

Merchants can start passing along credit card fees to consumers tomorrow in ontario/Canada.

Telus has already said they will be.

Not being talked about enough. The protection that cards give now comes at a price.

As for points and cash backs...well if this picks up, then those perks would be meaningless. I won't pay $10 extra today so that I can get $10 in cash back later.

Looks like we need to all plan for debit card use soon for everyday purchases unless protection is needed.

yeah I'm in the same boat. if you want to pass on additional fees I will find another way to pay.

I am also one of those people who always carries cash, so there's that too.

Cash is expensive for businesses. Banks are likely charging anywhere from .5% - 4.25% for cash and coin plus a deposit fee and then for large businesses they would need brinks/Garda service and thats just the depositing side and not the cash supply for tils.

Not much of an issue for me. I use my credit card about 2-3 times a year.
We have multiple cards in the family and use them for basically every single purchase. Depending on the cash back or travel offers we choose which ones to use at which store. We never carry over a balance to the next month.

If you are able to stay disciplined and pay off every card every month, it's just been prudent to use CCs. I can cut my travel budget by a 3rd if I can get a free ticket for one of us, plus perks like free luggage check in, priority accesses etc.

With a surcharge though, that all changes. If this becomes widespread I'll cancel most of my cards and keep one that doesn't have an annual free just in case.

not to mention what it does for your credit score too.

but yeah, if I can earn bonus points on a purchase I was going to make anyways without incurring interest, I will.

I still remember when fucking TD Insurance tried to charge me a 3% monthly fee to receive monthly direct deposits for my insurance premiums. you can imagine how that went for TD...

honestly i want him to buy it so he can see exactly what happens when he gives it "freedom". i.e. left with nothing but racist sexist trolls with nobody left to troll.

someone will build a new twitter eventually, and then all the trolls will follow all the libs there to own them.

eh I am less confident in a positive outcome than you are, mostly because I don't think he will accept/acknowledge reality if he tries his 'fixes' and they lead to the inevitable result.

for reference, see his stubborn refusal to backtrack from his idiotic 'Ukrainian peace plan'. or in other words, he doesn't seem like the type who is swayed by facts and evidence.

also, if he buys it and takes control of it shortly it could have a serious (negative) impact on the mid-terms. so him buying it could lead us to a better place eventually, but I'm not convinced we make it there given the near-term harm that can occur.
