OT: Movies/TV Shows

I find Cruise's most enjoyable movies to be his MI films and 1st Top Gun film. Cocktail is a "bad" movie that's kinda fun to watch though. Rain Man, A Few Good Men, Color of Money, The Firm are 'Good" films that you don't run (like Cruise) to see again. I didn't get the fuss over Maverick myself.

Magnolia is awesome, but I think I’ve watched Eyes Wide Shut at roughly a 10:1 ratio to it.

It’s Kubrick’s psycho-sexual masterpiece….and I think probably my favourite performance from either Cruise or Kidman, by a decent margin.

Magnolia is an awesome flick, but I feel like it suffers on rewatches, by how much better a director PTA became once he hit that There Will Blood’ ‘The Master’ and ‘Phantom Thread’ phase of his career (could prob include ‘Punch Drunk Love’ in there too), where they’re much more measured/sub textual and a tiny bit less showy.

Doesn’t mean Magnilia isn’t amazing, it is…but when I rewatch it, I can feel it being a lesser version of the film he’d have made from that script today.

Cruise has been in so many good movies. Shockingly so.
His career has changed a lot in the past 10 years. But at a time, he was working with legendary directors so much. Moreso than any actor ever. Now he seems to work with the same 3 guys and is the action hero.
Scorcesse, both Scott brothers, Stone, Coppola, Kubrick, Depalma,PTA, Speilberg..

As he aged he became just an action star. Definitely a weird arc.

Liam Neeson seems to have done the same thing.

Valkrie is entertaining. I HATED Vanilla Sky and i had seen the original.
Knight & Day is a big bore and doesn't work.
Never seen Valkyrie (looks lame), and I thought Vanilla Sky was ok, just ok.

But I liked Knight and Day. I thought it was fun, popcorn action stuff.

I also like Cameron Diaz, so there's that too.

Doing a rewatch of the Rocky movies. Forgot how good they were. Enjoyable piece of 80s action rolled into a 1.5 hour movie. With todays movies mostly hovering around the 2.5 hour mark it’s nice to be able to get in a good movie at 1.5.
