The Mother-fucking goddamn Off-season Thread

Not a comparable - more just the number. So like what we hear where the best player is getting $10M - so they aren’t giving $10M to the second best player on that team. Sometimes it’s the team structure that can dictate things (at least when ppl talk of these things). So if Matthews takes a team friendly team and pretend takes 10m - Nylander isn’t gonna get that and puts him in his place to go back to 8-9M (hypothetically speaking). But if Matthews takes 14M - will Nylander be less likely to be good with 8-9M?

But that's ridiculous. you can't inflate the value of other players just because they play on the same team with someone better. if he's not good with a contract in line with his actual comparables around the league like other players, we trade him, simple as.

Pretty sure Willy's good with going to free agency and a higher cap on the horizon. And that's fine, he's entitled to do what he wants.

But Treliving will have to move him sometime during the year in that case. Letting Nylander walk is not acceptable.

worked for Mitch

Trading him would be tough though. It makes no sense to give up a guy who will likely score 40 goals and be our best player in the playoffs in a year we are trying to win.

you’d have to get a top end player back. Not many deals out there that would make sense. Maybe Lindholm/D but does Calgary trade a rental for a rental anyway?

can’t dump Willy for picks.

I don't understand why keeping him isn't the best option whether he signs or not. If there isn't a deal out there that improves them immediately, isn't Nylander the type of player they'd try to trade for as a rental anyway? Why accept a rental-type package for him when you're a contender?

He'd be worth $9.5 for just his speed and goal-scoring, we forget that the memes are valuable too!

what's tougher is letting him walk away. This team has done that with so called own rentals in the past and it's a concept I heartily loathe. It would be especially egregious in this case where we're quadrupling down on a player core combination that has had zero success.

Lindholm would make sense but I don't see the Flames paying Nylander 10 million for an extension either.

He doesnt want to get short changed like he feels last time , will wait for 34 to sign first

The notion that he got short changed is nonsense. He got 7.5m per year. The cap hit came down to 6.9m because of how they could structure the first year of the deal. The best comparable at the time was pastrnak, who got 6.6m the year before.

the short change narrative was because they overpaid Marner a bit, but Marner also signed for longer and has significantly outproduced nylander.

Lots of other teams seem to be able to sign top players for long term deals.

why does Toronto have to be different?

the players are coddled here and feel comfortable making these demands that wouldn't fly in other markets

what do you expect when the President calls and reassures them they won't be moved even before a GM is hired

I do agree. this has to stop. They are treated so well here. Amazing market to play in. You also can earn a lot of endorsements.

I understand Willy’s gripe.

He signed a fair deal (which he probably thought wasn’t all that fair at the time), only to see Matty and Marner sign overly rich deals. Then he goes and has his best year last season while Matty dropped significantly, and Marner didn’t earn his dollars in the playoffs like he did.

So now Willy’s like, oh so I should sign some $8.8m deal while Matty signs for $14m? And really he’s right. There isn’t $6m per year difference between them. Or say $4m or $5m with Marner. Now, Willy also knows that he’s not going to get too close to matching their salaries either, but it’s an issue of optics. If I can’t get close, I want something with symbolic significance so that I can feel valued and happy, and which recognizes that I improved the most out of anyone on the team last year, and believe I’ve got even more to give.

What’s got symbolic significance? Eight figures. $10m. And he’s in no rush, that wouldn’t kick in for another year, so the only danger is that they trade him rather than keep negotiating. But that risk is probably very low for at least another month, so let’s keep trying to get that number for now. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s talking about $10.5m with the intent to drop another $500k to close it, while the Leafs are stuck trying to figure out how to get him to take $9.25 m or $9.5m. It’s still too early in any event.

I promised you all a psychology of Willy post yesterday, so Christmas just came early.

seems like you missed your calling pursuing a career as a lawyer, Dr. LOF.

I think both guys have pretty obvious numbers that are fair tbh. A tad surprised they aren’t done yet but I also agree that Willy’s probably not in a super rush here.
