OT: The Toronto Blue Jays

Im not doing this shit again. I dont even really want Bellinger.

That contract reeks of being atop worse in MLB lists in 2 years.

Yeah, agreed. His value also comes from playing a decent CF. Which for us either means keeping him there even though it's sub-optimal for Varsho, or shifting him to be more like a LF/1B. But then his value there is really reduced.

The good about Bellinger is that nothing in his offensive metrics from last year scream that it's a one-year rebound and that he will immediately go back to the player he was 2020-2022. You can always expect a slight dip back, his BABIP was a little high given his batting profile, but if his drop in strikeouts is real, he should still be a pretty valuable batter. Looking at his profile, I don't think that it's actually going to be as egregious as you might think.

I think it really comes down to what the contract for him looks like. Fangraphs has him looking at a deal like 6/150, so I guess similar to the Springer deal, which I think it probably ok. But MLBTR had him as 12/264 as their projected deal, which to me is absolutely batshit insane to consider. If he comes in at that level, then yes, absolutely in 2 years that's going to look like the worst contract in baseball.

I would rather give Chapman 4/88. But will he sign for that?

I am not that excited about Bellinger either, but gotta remember that prior to 2020-2022 he was NL MVP in 2019. So he has played at a very high level before, and suffered a bad shoulder injury requiring surgery that probably had a lot to do with his struggles. And a 134 wRC+ in 2023.

But absolutely hell-fuck-no on anything more than 5-6 years and $150m.

I'd rather give Chapman 6/150 than Bellinger 8/200+

I think Chapman's bat can rebound enough to where he's fine, and the glove at 3B is really important, and if you add a Soler/JDM and a Joc/Duval or something platoon in left you can survive Chapman hitting 8th

I really dont want Varsho or Bellinger in LF at their costs.

I cant help but think that if the team is this hard for Bellinger they might view him as their 1B in the near future.
I assume we would play him a decent amount at 1B to give Vlad more DH days. But I think his value as a 1B is much smaller, even as a gold glove tier 1B, that's just not worth that much. I'd rather just bring in a Hoskins for a pillow deal if we want a 1B

If we sign Bellinger i want a pure DH like Soler/JDM/Hoskins too. Im not remotely interested in a DH by committee, i'd actually much prefer just giving guys like Vlad and Springer more days off if they need rest.
