New Canadian Politics Thread

I guess the response to the trade war really depends on whether you think it is existential for Canada, or not. I fall in the former camp.

I can see why folks who fall in the latter camp support deescalating

To my point—if you can listen to this stuff, which again, Trump and/or his people have been repeating on an almost daily basis for months now, and are not saying about any of the other countries they’re currently engaged in a trade war with—and still subscribe to the Presto sunshine, lollipops & rainbows optimistic view that this is even potentially just grandstanding for a more favourable trade deal that we just need to calmly sit down and negotiate…well, honestly I’m jealous. I wish I could buy that and it’d be fantastic if that’s true and I’m completely wrong.

But it seems hopelessly naive to me, and I think that continuing to approach this situation like that’s the case endangers this country.

Tariffs wont make Canada fold in 4 years, we've never been more united. And compagnies wont invest billions and billions to move to the USA when the tariffs might just go in 4 years.

Market is already bleeding, left and right medias are shitting on the tariffs, plus he's fat and old and the biggest Luigi target. We'll die canadians.

sounds like you expect free and fair elections in 2028 in the US - I do not.

and let's check back in on Canadian unity after two years of economic hardship... this is just the very, very beginning

I just assume everything bad he tells us he's gonna do is what he'll try to do. And assume every time he tells us about something great he's gonna do that sounds way too good to be true is bullshit. Usually holds up pretty well.

We are 10 years past the taking him seriously but not literally stuff.

Counterpoint: the tariffs we impose on US products hurt our economy as well, and hasten the damage that Trump’s trade war is doing.

It is clearly an existential threat, and yet it is quite possible that the correct response is a mixture of strategic countertarrifs, non-tariff measures, meetings, orange idiot ego massaging, and a willingness to de-escalate temporarily as a show of good faith. We have to play the long game, not get caught up in who looks tougher at any given moment.

I’m confident that we are also considering non-tariff measures that inflict maximum pain on the US, but don’t sound very splashy or easily digestible for the MAGA crowd. I expect this to be part of Carney’s strategy.

Just curious, when Trudeau says that the purpose of this trade war is to bring Canada’s economy to its knees to ultimately make it the 51st state, do you guys believe him?

Yes. Obviously. This is a fight for our existence. He is trying to destroy us.

That’s why I want the smartest response possible. Not just the one that makes us feel the toughest.

Yeah I think we all agree on what is happening but simply disagree with the correct response is an emotional like-for-like response. I'd like to see a bit more creativity than that.
