New Canadian Politics Thread

Just to be clear though, we have a trade deal they're not honouring.

Guess I'm just confused as to what you're going to accomplish in a meeting with people not honouring a deal they agreed to.

Doug from 3 days ago was of a mindset to punch back hard until they honour the deal.
In a perfect world, sure, Trump should be made to live by the agreement that he himself negotiated. But in case you hadn't noticed, this world ain't perfect. We can just go down that road of taking turns doubling, tripling, quadrupling down on tariffs ... but why not at least try to see if an agreement can be reached first? The goal here is to do what's best for Canada, not what's best for somebody's ego. That's their job.

Ultimately, if Carney wins on our side we'll have someone who understands the economy better than 99.9% of the population, the ins and outs of Canada, USA, and Europe micro and macro economics. On their side we'll have someone whose understanding of world economics can be written on the back of a pack of matches.

TLDR: see if we can placate the moron with some minor concessions and reduce the strain on our economy, and if not switch to the longview and figure out the best way to insulate our economy and maximize damage to theirs.

you can impose electricity surcharges AND try to negotiate a new agreement simultaneously.

Ford just backed off in exchange for nothing tangible.

Kinda typical negotiation tactic to back down on a threat lines escalation if the other side is open to discussion.

Doug exposed a big weakness on the US side (energy dependence) that hopefully our federal leaders have taken notice of.

If you're asking me to buy Doug Ford stock and expect that he does the right thing moving forward, you're out of your mind. But to criticize him for how he's dealt with the Maga nonsense at this point? That would be disingenuous. Can't do it.

Hes still the same greaseball dummy he was before all of this started. he didn't become a Chessmaster last week, he just intuitively knows that the best way to deal with a bully is to punch them in the fucking face because rexdale.

I agree with Mindz that it's dangerous to get into a media war with these people. That being said, Doug was pretty damn on point and despite what the North Korean lady wearing a Lutnick mask said on tv, he clearly rattled Donnie Drumpf.

Personally, I don’t see any purpose for or anything to be gained from any further meetings with Trump or his people, as things currently stand. And I think backing down at all is the wrong strategy with these guys. That’s what frustrates me so much about Ford backing down for a meeting.

They are explicitly threatening the continued existence of Canada—and it is my belief that this is not a negotiating tactic or a troll to own the Libs up in Canada. I believe they’re deadly serious. I also believe they are 100% serious when they say their intention is to use economic warfare to force Canadians into accepting a US conquest of Canada.

As long as all of the above continues, my opinion is that the only defense that’s possibly going to work is to respond to each punch they throw with a harder one, and to absolutely refuse to back down at all until the threats stop.

Once they recognize Canada’s sovereignty and the will of its people and drop the BS tariffs, they can have all the meetings they want with our government about trade. Until then though, we have to fight and keeping punching the bully back square in the nose whenever he hits us.

I have a tough time arguing with any of this
