New Canadian Politics Thread

This is true, but they are 100% bad faith right now. Their intention are malicious and ant promises are worthless.
I agree. I guess I just don't understand why it's a huge concession to delay for 2 days for a meeting when Trump has issued delays for the last 2-3 months. It's a dick measuring contest on who caves vs who is the alpha and the Maga administration is making a point to outline that they are the alpha every chance they get. When all that's happening is destruction on both ends.

But again... I really understand it. Between social media over analysis culture, one administration mocking the other and telling us how alpha they are, and general herd mentality, I completely understand the optics point of view. The fact is the Maga administration continues to do a wonderful job convincing people on all sides that they are fully in control of every situation.

The scary part is. If the USA was smart they could probably have been strategic about tariffs and used them on this that hurt us more and them less.

Honestly dont see how. auto industry is our softest point with them imo.

Our specific trade flows do not favour the Americans in a broad trade war with us. They have a lot of things going for them in the fight, mainly just pure size and the level of integration, but I don't know if there are many categories they can tariff that don't hurt them more than us on a dollar for dollar basis.

They’re such little bitches, too.

They think they’re exuding strength but that’s just papering over their inherent weakness.

Our “luck” would come from an unforeseen events that blows up the control narrative. Now, they’ve gone turbo on smacking as many hornets nests with a tennis racket as possible, so one never knows what might happen.

Excellent news then. Fuck them all

It's not about dick measuring it's about standing up to a bully.

"Ok i'll give you my lunch money just this once" doesn't work.
Sure but the reference was more to it accomplishing nothing for the USA other than hurting ppl

Canada does need to stand up to them and hope internal pressure still means something

Possibly minor, but relevant point. Ontario’s surcharge on energy is not a “tariff”. It’s just basically a 25% price gouge designed to strike back at the US (since Ford doesn’t have the authority to impose tariffs.)

I won’t pretend to know enough about the electricity market in the Northeast to know whether that would have any impact on demand, or how much consumers would even notice. It’s possible that the major US purchasers of Ontario energy are major industrial users who are integrated with Ontario supply chains and Ford doesn’t have any interest in harming them.

I also don’t really care how this makes Ford look in the moment, it is much more about the long run. And you can’t take anything Lutnick says seriously. Ever, but especially right now. He’s in MAGA’s crosshairs as the scapegoat for the market conditions, so he’s going extra Trumpy-dear-leader-MAGAt to avoid being the fall guy.

Just to be clear though, we have a trade deal they're not honouring.

Guess I'm just confused as to what you're going to accomplish in a meeting with people not honouring a deal they agreed to.

Doug from 3 days ago was of a mindset to punch back hard until they honour the deal.
The meeting in Washington was meaningless too. If that’s how Ford is selling it, he’s being misleading and just trying to look important. Ford obviously can’t negotiate a trade deal with the US.

I’ve heard it said that the Ontario electricity surcharge was just shown as an example of what could happen if Quebec does the same, which would be way more consequential for US households.

Not sure if that’s true, but the idea was floated.

Edit: difference here, ON sells on spot market whereas QC has purchase agreements. Harder for QC to impose a surcharge - but maybe there are provisions in the contract. Lawyered up, no doubt.

Doug's meeting with Lutnick also will have federal officials there - the trade minister and ambassador I think.

Which is fine, talking's fine, it just seems naive to me to talk like the US is acting in good faith at all in these meetings. It's like they're talking to Russia at this point.

Not everything has to be a game with a winner and a loser. We're all getting lost here by the Maga administration. Canada has things the US needs, the US has things Canada needs. Come to a deal so both parties win. That's it. That's the goal. Ignore all the noise about anything else.
Uh, yes it does. In Trumplandia, everything is zero sum. Only one side is allowed to be happy, the other side has to be made to feel like a bitch. Trump doesn't want a deal, he wants an unconditional surrender. So the only option is to get medieval on his ass and turn off the power switch.
