2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

Why wouldn't he have chosen the Leafs over Florida at the deadline if both options were available?

I don't think there was any reason to think Florida was a heavy favorite or anything

5333x4000!

I don't think he went there for a couple months of sun.

It makes zero sense that he'd want to join us next season

Money. He's a free agent, we're set to have quite a lot of capspace regardless of other roster decisions.

but didn't prefer to come over this season when it was a better situation.

Why is next year a worse situation than this year?

Letting Marner and Tavares walk is not burning a year, it's actually the opposite. It will likely leave us more competitive in the playoffs than this team has been over the last 7 years.
You're saying this without knowing who they'd be replaced with, and having full faith that this management team will replace them with more impactful players. I'm expecting you'll say, "well anyone is more impactful than them!", until we get to next year's playoffs and we see the new guys go ice cold after game 5 (just like Knies and McMann) and wonder why.

Marner put in a shit effort but still put up some points, and Tavares was great in the first round and the first few games of this round, and then it was 4 games of garbage from everyone. I'd be loathe to just dump them and say hey Boeser and Bennett will make us champs! It's not happening. If we don't replace them with ELITE players who can bring their regular season performances into the playoffs, we're wasting our time. And I don't see any way to do that short of getting McDavid a year from now. To lock up all the cap space on mediocrity will put the final nail in the Matthews era and give us a few years of watching its dead corpse meander around before crumpling over.

Yeah, the choice between keeping a signed long term Willy at $11.5M and trading him to try to sign Marner for less than $13M is the biggest no-brainer there's ever been.

Yup, and I'm fine with that. If we can't replace what Marner and Tavares bring in the playoffs for the 22 million they made this year, fold the fucking team.
I don't doubt you can replace what they brought. But will you be able to get players who'll produce more than them when Willy and Matthews also badly struggled to produce in the late stages.

Willy historically doesn't struggle to produce late in series. Matthews, again, scored the biggest goal of the season with half of a wrist in game 6.

I'm entirely, entirely, entirely good with spreading that 22 million into 3-4 good players so that we're not running so many fucking zeroes out there and not relying in 4 guys so fucking much going forward....while keeping the two best big game performers of the 4.

Fucking entirely.

But you have the realize the the keep Marner and trade Willy thing is based on the assumption that a legit #1d is available and that they can make a trade for him. Probably unrealistic but thats the thesis and obviously if you can't find a deal you just keep him. It's not just a trade for the sake of trade. So it would be Marner + #1d - Nylander vs Nylander - Marner + cap space

see if we lose mitch we don;t get a similar talent back.

willly would not be as good if we needed him to play mitch's role.

but willy is signed and smells better so could get us something elite back maybe, so it's our best chance to keep the same number of elite pieces and we probably end up keeping the better winger too.

If involves keeping Marner at his market rate, which makes it a terrible scenario. I've seen enough.

eh did you see willy's patheticness in the dzone the last few games. absolutely embarassing stuff.

and mitch would score just as much if he had the easy matchups.
