2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

If the promotion gets him out of the GM role I'm fine with it but we all know he's getting the Pres/GM gig and its just another sign that the board refuses to see the big picture
The Kevin Lowe firing by promotion!

It just means Tre will hire a minion in his own image, like Shanny did with Tre.

It all but assuredly accomplishes exactly nothing.

Shanahan being a symbolic pound of flesh, and Marner the other, replaced with assuredly a worse player

MLSE's "big picture" isn't the same as the fans' "big picture". Guys who wear suits 7 days a week don't give a shit about the sportsing. They care about the money. And ever since winning at making money stopped being dependent upon winning at sportsing, we have had and will continue having this disconnect between the two.

Like any 21st century corporation, the days of MLSE or any other corporate entity looking upon its workforce as an asset are over. Today, your workers aren't assets but mere "costs", and like any other cost, the goal is to minimize them. MLSE will spend what it has to spend on the Leafs front office and on players because of the public and largely transparent financials of the situation. They can't appear to be cheap because it might threaten revenues so yes, they spend close to the max on everything. But they aren't especially bothered about how it gets spent or on whom because winning games is not high on their list of needs. Winning is a "nice to have" but not a "must have" in order for MLSE to realize a profit from year to year. They also know that the fanbase are basically a cult so there is no amount of abuse that will ever be considered "too much". Nothing will drive them away and no matter what they charge for the product those fans will simply throw their wallets at them and scream "TAKE OUR MONEY!"

Nothing changes on the ice unless or until the suits start seeing red ink or, at the very least, bracketed numbers on the balance sheets.

They’re not changing him out as GM. He just got them to finish first and go as far as they ever have in the playoffs. Putting past all the noise of game 7, why would they have cause to replace him other than to just placate the mob, which I don’t think they really care about.

Exactly. They don't care about a mob that doesn't care enough about themselves to stop feeding the beast. MLSE doesn't care if you show up to games and boo or toss your $300 jerseys on the ice. As long as you pay to get in it's all profit for them. The "why" of it all doesn't matter. Only the money does.

Because he's Shanny's guy, and the new president should ideally get a clean slate to do what he wants not inherit the old guy's stuff.

They wont let the new guy do it ( new guy is probably Tre anyways) probably should though

I do think MLSE understands the concept of hiring a prez (Masai, Shapiro, Shanahan) and letting him do anything he wants.

Hopefully they hire someone good tho.

They would just eliminate the position or add it to Tre’s existing title. I don’t think we see a new GM.

Do you try and poach someone behind the scenes in Florida? They seem to be the new Tampa in finding talent that fits their system

I think they think turning over on Shanahan and Marner will be enough to appease the masses who will be geared up and ready to go come training camp.

I also expect they are very much pro Tre, and very pro Berube
