2025-2026 Off Season Thread - The Rehappening

In fairness Ekblad, Marchand and Bennett are probably he #2,3 and 4 UFAs this year.

Much different than OEL/Lorentz.
sure, but their new deals are likely to return less overall value than their old deals. part of florida's success has been its cap efficiency - getting more $$$ value than what they pay. those efficiencies are likely lost on their new UFA deals

Agreed. But they also all fill the three biggest holes the Leafs have had for 7 years, a #1 D, a center and a veteran leader that isn't a giant bitch.

Marchand's contract will be horrible though.

It would obviously have to be a fairly significant overpay to attract one of those guys. Of the 3 I think I prefer overpaying for ekblad. Though it's all quite risky.

Leafs should just hire that Panthers lead nerd that apparently runs the show and find value guys instead tbh. Like he's very easily poachable for the Leafs. Just pay him.

eh I don't think Ekblad is a #1. Forsling was their best d-man both cup runs. and pretty sure Montour got more icetime than Ekblad too, and was the top PP guy.

this year Ekblad was on PP1 at least.

all that said, I'm prolly interested in Ekblad. but we gotta clear our Rielly or Carlo to facilitate that move.

yah fix the systemic issue instead of just overpaying the panthers scraps...

Do they even bother to use the nerds they have now? The Berube system suggests they don't
I think they did in the offseason. Tre mentioned the analytics guys/pro scouts targeted their guys and he went to work to try to sign them. And I do sort of see that in the guys that they acquired.

But the other bit is that all nerds are not created equal. Many are dumb as fuck. And we don't know the extent as which he actually listens to the nerds and for what purposes they're used for outside of identifying UFAs.

The Leafs should be bending the rules and getting big corporations offering these UFA commercials. That's their advantage. Marchand loves speaking and actually did have a lot of endorsement deals in Boston. I feel Leafs aren't playing to their strengths. You can get Marchand 4+ million per in endorsements here.

not sure why we should parse cap distrubution. Panthers were just way over the cap.

Both teams had some wastage at the bottom of the lineup - Kampf/Krok vs Vanecek/Sturm - but the difference there is that the Leafs' wastage blocked them from making moves at the deadline, while the Panthers' wastage was only taken on at the deadline because they had so much extra space due to LTIR - so in florida's case there was no actual wastage.

so to be clear, do you agree with the 'let's just sign ex-Panthers' teambuilding approach?

I don't think it's gonna move our needle much at all. we'll just burn through all our cap space on UFA deals we'll likely later regret.
I do not. I was just pointing out a historical example
