Hurricanes 2024-25 Post Mortem and Off Season Stuff

And I agree with Jerry that Dundon paying somebody not to work seems counter to his general thing.
I disagree to some extent. Dundon is all about maximizing performance for each dollar he spends. If he thinks the total number of dollars he's spending will deliver better performance (i.e., paying KK roughly $1 million to go away and spending the other roughly $4 million he would have had to pay him to pay someone else), he will do so.

Can we get 3 million per of value from him? If so why buy him out or trade him and retain? Why not just realize he’s worth less than you’re paying him and get the lesser value he provides if the cost is the same.

I think he’s got to go to open up some options for other contributors. So you take the most cost effective route you can find to lose him.

The complicating factor there is Staal. If you had KK in that third slot and expected less offense from him, then yeah. I do think he's decent value in that role. But Kotkaniemi hasn't really stepped up his defensive game and Staal has remained relatively effective in that slot. There probably doesn't exist a world would Brind'Amour would slot KK above Staal and keep him there. Therefore, he's excess to requirements at a 4th liner and baldly not up to being a 2nd line center. Unless they convert him to checking line wing or something, I literally don't see a natural role for the guy regardless of what they're paying him.

Unless you put him at 4C figuring you’re overpaying by quite a bit but can slide him up if 11 is out. But seems like you would be better off spending the $$ on a 2C.

I don’t see keeping him. I can’t think of any way of looking at it where there are not better options.

I figure this issue is obvious because Kotkaniemi was shifted to 4th line duty in two playoffs in a row. You can't keep paying $4.8 million against the Cap for a guy you don't trust to play Top 9 minutes when it matters. You just can't. Honestly, you could replace him with virtually anyone. He's barely even a replacement level player. This is the ultimate no-brainer

Buying KK out is the quickest solution. The cap hits would go for TEN seasons:

$841,333 x2 seasons
$461,333 x3 seasons
$841,333 x5 seasons

The actual money outlay would be that $841,333 per year over 10 years.

We could also trade KK with or without retention. Or we could continue to hang on to him and hope that something at some point clicks.

I'm going to with

45% chance KK gets bought out
50% chance KK gets traded
5% chance KK is retained
When you consider the lack of center depth in the league as a whole I bet that there are a handful of teams that see KK as a useful piece as a 3C. With a rising cap each of the next few years his cap hit isn’t awful moving forward. I think he actually has a small bit of trade value. Is he a good fit here no, but I can see him still being useful to someone.

Going point...any team that doesn't have someone as good as Staal in the #3C role should be taking a look at KK. Our problem is that we don't need another #3C, but a sold #2C or even an upgrade at #1C (as much as I love Aho).

BTW, look what they did for me while out fighting cancer. The one over my heart is from the President of Launch, and huge hockey fan, and says You're one tough S.O.B
Love it

When I was fighting cancer my children. Bought me a football signed by all the players. I was a huge VT fan at the time. That remains one of my favorite gifts all time. Not because of the ball itself, but because of the thought the kids put into it

Good wishes and prayers headed to all y’all fighting cancer.

I work for a company based in Oak Brook (Chicago) IL, and some of them are high on Roslovic as a center.
I mean ... OK. He's defensively a non-factor at center but he's a decent puck distributor who has a streaky shot. He's out of place at center on a contender, but somebody like Chicago that needs a 2nd center to play with some offensive minded wings might talk themselves into him. For a contender, it's his versatility that gives him value. He can play all across the forward lines and move up and down in usage without being a distraction. He put in a good shift here in that kind of role, and you'd think he'd prefer to do that again to going back to a developing roster ... but hey, he's going to get an NHL job somewhere. Those 22 goals he scored here guarantees it.

Marner's agent and/or Dad has been making the rounds with the whisper campaign lately. Looks like he's definitely not even thinking about extending in Toronto and may be looking for a short deal (3-4 years) to ensure he gets another bite at the UFA apple before he starts to decline too much to miss out on another pay bump. Could just be noise, as that camp is famous for generating noise ... but that might scare off a few interested parties. Carolina and Vegas appear to be in the mix and both are historically willing to be unconventional, so I doubt it changes his high end options too much.

This is the type of setup that could have the Canes surprising everyone (except for us), by signing Marner for 2 years at a $14.75 million AAV. Marner gets serious bank for 2 seasons with a Cup contender and is back as a UFA when the cap is at $113.5 million (up from $95.5 million this coming season).

One other thing to note, especially if you are thinking the Canes might go really really big in the trade market..... Svech's Modified NTC (10 team approved trade list) kicks in this July 1st.
