Kind of a mold breaker pick from Carolina. More of a finished product than they normally go with at forward. Drury-esque. The kind of guy they used to take when Francis was GM. Then again, they REALLY need some actual centers in the pipeline, regardless of stylistic issues.Charlie Cerrato from Penn St. at 49. 6’0” center, passed over in 2 previous drafts.
That’s the gem or steal of the draft so far!!! A robbery at 62. Kid has first round offensive skill and there were a handful of draft gurus who had him ranked in the first round! At 62 the Canes pick Ivan Ryabkin from USHL Muskegon. A 5’11” center
Well, don't say nobody warned you ... because I definitely warned you
One of the guys on the NHL Network panel said that too. That’s the gem or steal of the draft so far!!! A robbery at 62. Kid has first round offensive skill and there were a handful of draft gurus who had him ranked in the first round!
I really expected Carolina to take Ryabkin at 49 (that's who I was hinting at with that under-valued Russian players post). He's the kind of kid the Canes LOVE to take a flyer on. The fact that he was still there at 62 just speaks to Carolina's specific flavor being a little different than everyone else's. A year ago he was the top rated Russian skater in the draft class, but his stock slipped a bit when he came to North America and spend a season adjusting in the USHL, only playing half a season with Muskegon. Pronman with The Athletic had him rated as high as 11th over all in his post 24 draft rankings. He could easily be the value pick of this draft in a couple of years. That’s the gem or steal of the draft so far!!! A robbery at 62. The Canes traded up! And then took another Russian, Kurban Limatov 6’4” LHD from MHL Dynamo Moscow

Igor Knaysev was the man you are thinking of…a first round bust for sure!, he went 15th overall in 2001. Times have changed a lot.Mike and Tripp had better brush up on their Russkiy with all these Russians coming in. The Hurricanes shied away from Russian prospects for a long time until recently. I'm pretty sure GMJR was almost totally against drafting Russians after they had difficulty with a high pick who never materialized. (can't remember his name) We used to be a team loaded with Finns, can't say that now.
Jim
Mostly we have scouting now. IIRC Knyazev was considered a reach at the time.Igor Knaysev was the man you are thinking of…a first round bust for sure!, he went 15th overall in 2001. Times have changed a lot.
And Rutherford admitted later that Carolina has never scouted him in person. Sigh.Mostly we have scouting now. IIRC Knyazev was considered a reach at the time.
Knyazev indirectly brought us Justin Williams. Iggy and Snuggles to Arizona for Danny Markov. Markov to the Flyers for Williams.Igor Knaysev was the man you are thinking of…a first round bust for sure!, he went 15th overall in 2001. Times have changed a lot.
Snuggles. I always have to laugh at that.Knyazev indirectly brought us Justin Williams. Iggy and Snuggles to Arizona for Danny Markov. Markov to the Flyers for Williams.
