2025 Canes Entry Draft Thread

Charlie Cerrato from Penn St. at 49. 6’0”, 190 lbs. center, passed over in 2 previous drafts. Tony Grantao is on the panel, he tried to recruit him at Wisconsin.

Kind of a mold breaker pick from Carolina. More of a finished product than they normally go with at forward. Drury-esque. The kind of guy they used to take when Francis was GM. Then again, they REALLY need some actual centers in the pipeline, regardless of stylistic issues.

That’s the gem or steal of the draft so far!!! A robbery at 62. Kid has first round offensive skill and there were a handful of draft gurus who had him ranked in the first round!
One of the guys on the NHL Network panel said that too.

I really expected Carolina to take Ryabkin at 49 (that's who I was hinting at with that under-valued Russian players post). He's the kind of kid the Canes LOVE to take a flyer on. The fact that he was still there at 62 just speaks to Carolina's specific flavor being a little different than everyone else's. A year ago he was the top rated Russian skater in the draft class, but his stock slipped a bit when he came to North America and spend a season adjusting in the USHL, only playing half a season with Muskegon. Pronman with The Athletic had him rated as high as 11th over all in his post 24 draft rankings. He could easily be the value pick of this draft in a couple of years.

The Canes traded up to 67! And then took another Russian, Kurban Limatov 6’4” LHD from MHL Dynamo Moscow

FWIW, I suspect the Canes see Ryabkin as a pro winger which is probably why they prioritized Cerrato on their draft board. That guy is a pure centerman and Carolina has GOT to start stocking the larder with actual centers.

Stay at home bruiser and another guy that had a lot of ratings well above his actual draft position. I suspect his stock slid for general Russia reasons because best as I can tell his ratings are very similar to (or better than) that run of bigger D that went in the early part of the 2nd round. I love this pick too. But then again, the 2nd and 3rd round is where the Canes scouting staff really shines ... and they still have that freebie 3rd rounder they got from Tampa last summer.

The Original PuckPedia tweet was deleted. The Canes sent #125 this year and a 2026 3rd to the Kings for the pick they used on Limatov.

Charlie Cerrato’s father is former 49ers and Commanders executive Vinny Cerrato.

Mike and Tripp had better brush up on their Russkiy with all these Russians coming in. The Hurricanes shied away from Russian prospects for a long time until recently. I'm pretty sure GMJR was almost totally against drafting Russians after they had difficulty with a high pick who never materialized. (can't remember his name) We used to be a team loaded with Finns, can't say that now.

Igor Knaysev was the man you are thinking of…a first round bust for sure!, he went 15th overall in 2001. Times have changed a lot.

Speaking of Russian D and scouting, it's pretty obvious that the Canes scouted the crap out of Dynamo's youth squad. With the 87th pick, they took string-bean defenseman Roman Bausov. 6'5", but only 179 pounds, Carolina is obviously hoping he grows into that frame a bit. Another stay at home type, so presumably you're taking a two pack with Limatov and Bausov and hoping one of them hits. Which is fine, the system is light on that type of player. Legault and Montgomery fit that bill, but I'm not sure anybody is terribly high on either of them. The Shokhorin kid they drafted last years is also a big boy.

I think (!) Carolina doesn't have a 4th round pick anymore. So everybody can take a break for a bit.

Knyazev indirectly brought us Justin Williams. Iggy and Snuggles to Arizona for Danny Markov. Markov to the Flyers for Williams.

Snuggles. I always have to laugh at that.

I think his one shining moment was a pass into the O zone vs. Jersey (???) that stopped in a puddle, and someone potted a playoff OT game winner.
