2025-26 Hurricanes Prospects and Minors Thread

Not many of our Pre-2024 draft Russians seem to be anything special. Maybe Alexander Perevalov, but none of the rest of them did much of anything in terms of production this past season.

Some of the 2024 kids, especially Kol and Shokhrin (both 6 round Dmen) showed some signs. 2024 2nd round pick Nikita Artamonov looked like he took a step backwards. The 2025 kids are all too young still to know how their careers will pan out.

Other than Kochetkov, we haven't really hit on any of these Russians. Frolov is probably our best Russian prospect not in North America, and he was injured for most of the past season.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Nadeau. There is no spot in the top 6 for him unless we are moving Hall down, and then that makes Stanoven's line too unphysical.
As much as I’d love to see him on the PP with that huge one timer, I think he’s more likely to find playing time somewhere else. Again, all bets are off until this playoff campaign is finished. If it goes well, then there will be less inclination to change things … which might open up opportunities for Nadeau here.

Yup. At this point the general idea with those Russian long shot guys (which is what 90% of them are) is to let them cook in the various Russian leagues and hope a couple of them bloom late.

And I hope that if Carolina is going to continue this Russian prospect strategy that they’ll commit more resources to in person scouting. Up until now it’s felt an awful lot like throwing darts while blindfolded. I really didn’t like the time when the Canes just avoided Russians altogether, but this idea of leaning into that market and just hoping for the best ain’t really hitting on much either.

I’ve never seen Suzuki as a fit for this system. He seems more finesse than big body who can skate and play RBA hockey. He is not going to supplant any current Cane and he’s been around long enough that he’s had ample opportunity to try and make a case. Now, would he be a better fit in a different org without our depth? Maybe…
The dreaded NHL brother syndrome!!! 😀
A hockey buddy and I one time over beers played this hockey brother memory game where there always seems to be a higher end NHL player that has a shitty brother that also played but isn’t near as good as the other brother!

Once a few drinks have passed it makes the brain work…
Dwayne Jetski and his brother Keith.
Joe Sakic and his brother Brian.
Pavel Bure and his brother Valeri
Eric Staal and the youngest brother Jared…🍻

The list goes on and on…

Pierre and Sylvain Turgeon..

There can’t be too many people that saw both Wayne and Keith Jetski play. I saw Keith play in the OHL. I went to a couple of Peterborough Petes games when I was working there in October 1986. Because what else does one do in Peterborough in October?

A few NC locals surely saw both of them because Keith played a year with the Winston Salem Thunderbirds late in his career. I went to one of their games with a college buddy and he was slower than slow but still maybe the best passer I’d seen in person up until then.

I don't think they overlapped …

Checks … nope. He was with the Thunderbirds in 1990-91 and the Icecaps’ first season was 1991-92. In fact, I think the Thunderbirds folded after that year that Gretzky played with them.

Valeri Bure was not Pavel, but he wasn’t a fringe player. Had 35 goals one year for Calgary.

Dwayne Jetski had another brother—Brent—who actually did make it to The Show for 13 games with Tampa.

In college I saw Gordie Howe play with his sons in Houston. I knew nothing about hockey so it was kind of wasted on me.
Gordie took warmups with the Ice Caps and signed autographs in the concourse one night many years ago in Dorton. I was lucky to be there. Still have his signature.

Yeah, they moved to WV after the 91-92 season. We started making the drive up from Greenville to watch IceCaps games in 91.

That’s right. The Wheeling Nailers were the old T-Birds, weren’t they?

Checks … yup. The Nailers claim the old T-Birds history so it’s the same team. The Caps and Nailers had a pretty sharp rivalry going for awhile there. Part of me really misses the ECHL. It was grubby hockey, but it was fun.

Even Henri Richard suffered from that a bit as good as the Pocket Rocket was.

Keith and Wayne Primeau
Wayne and Brent Gretzky
Eric and Brett Lindros
Bates and Anthony Battaglia
PK and Malcolm Subban

As for Suzuki, I'm convinced that he never fully recovered from the eye injury back in his early days when he was projected to be better than Nick.

The ECHL was hockey. For hockey starved kids living in NC it was entertainment. $5 for us in the door with student IDs. As soon as we heard about the IceCaps we started making trips up from ECU. Wheeling was always the gooniest team. You could count on some yardsales when they were in town. From the fog on the ice to the glass getting so sweaty you couldn't see the game, it was straight out of the Slapshot movie. Players would skate laps to try to blow the fog off the ice. Dorton wasn't air conditioner back then. The place was a relative dump, which added to the nostalgic feeling.

I never got my hands on an IceCaps jersey. I assume someone, somewhere has made replicas? I did get some gear they unloaded, that I used for a few years, pants, etc.
