Last year Carolina got Miller and Ehlers, Vegas got Marner/Andersson. The best GMs just consistently try to add the best players.

Gotta love a GM that gets the best dman available. McKenna doesn’t hurt either.

raddysh is the first impact player from outside of the org since Tavares who was the first since kessel. Their game plan was just to surround their skill with grit.

And the fact that they never prioritized skill on the back end in retrospect is criminal.

Brady has a NMC, he gets less valuable every day this goes on. Look no further than our own example of Mitch, where we went to Vegas a year before we lost Mitch for nothing to Vegas and they didn't want to give up anything good for him.

Ya it was never really prioritized and there's no excuse for that. It's just the hardest thing to acquire and would require paying big $$$ and/or assets to get a dude or two. And because cap space was always extremely tight, grabbing cheap gritty depth just always felt easier for him. ROR was his best swing. Wish he did the same for a skilled two way d, just once post-Muzzin.

He got Erik Gustafsson I guess. But they desperately needed a skilled minute eater obviously.

Time was on their side, so I would've used it if I were them, even if it eventually yielded no better return.

I gotta believe that one of those later round picking teams (after say pick 20) would stupidly give up their pick for a 29 year old big boy RHD who has some brand name recognition, is cheap, and could be extended as part of the deal.

Go watch an Ethan Belchetz highlight reel and try not to fondle yourself. He'll be there at the 9 spot. Or as someone else mentioned, pick up a D (Gustafsson or Rudolph) and trade Chabot for a forward. Or keep Chabot and trade the other 2 1sts and a 2nd for a pretty good winger.

There's no reason the offers should get worse over the course of this week. I agree that they were treading water and going nowhere. The last two years especially proved that. So it's good that they got out in front of it, but they should've pushed on every pressure point they could find, including creating the optics that they'd sit on him for another two years before trading him without an improved return. Naturally, they didn't want to lose the chance to get the picks in this current draft so that they could make the selections they want, but they should've taken it down to the wire. On Friday morning they may have gotten a call that Lundell would be included instead of those two future picks, and off to the races with a much better return.

I believe Florida must have been absolutely salivating over the chance to add Brady, even just for marketing purposes of having the two brothers on the team. They would be pressured not to let the opportunity slip by. I would've waited much longer to see if they'd blink.

What if they traded for Larkin, or Hellebuyck instead? Then there's no offer at all, nevermind a good one. They were clearly looking to add. They traded Samoskevich to add picks so that they had surplus to spend on another good player. They were shopping, and now is the time for that.

I would've waited much longer to see if they'd blink.

When time is not on your side, don't tempt fate. This is how you end up giving Mitch Marner away for Nic Roy.

Man, you're really looking to add some long bois to our forward group, eh? 12 feet and 9 inches worth of Marchment & Tuch.

Have to say though, neither of those guys excite me much as our big additions up front. Florida just added an impact player in his 20's who's going to be there and in his prime for a while. I want to see something imaginative and ambitious like that, rather than just overpaying two guys on the wrong side of 30 who happen to be two of the bigger fish in an extremely shallow UFA pool.

And Hayton would be ok...just OK.
