Around the League 2019-2026 Edition

This is why you can’t compete for a cup going after Brodie/Foligo/Bertuzzi/Domi/Joshua/Maccelitypes every offseason.

Last year Carolina got Miller and Ehlers, Vegas got Marner/Andersson. The best GMs just consistently try to add the best players.

Gotta love a GM that gets the best dman available. McKenna doesn’t hurt either.
raddysh is the first impact player from outside of the org since Tavares who was the first since kessel. Their game plan was just to surround their skill with grit.

And the fact that they never prioritized skill on the back end in retrospect is criminal.

The fact that they couldn't pry Lundell loose and had to settle for picks in 2029 and 2030 instead is actually laughable.

They could well have told Florida to sit tight for another two years then, or just pony up a good roster player.

Fauci's flat cap prevented them from even trying to acquire an impact skill guy or two on d. I'm not convinced they would done it if they had the space, but Fauci made it real difficult on them even if they wanted to.

With that said, they probably still could have done something. Like ekholm or something.

Brady has a NMC, he gets less valuable every day this goes on. Look no further than our own example of Mitch, where we went to Vegas a year before we lost Mitch for nothing to Vegas and they didn't want to give up anything good for him.

They got good value for Brady.

They had like 7 years to get that guy, tho

Ya it was never really prioritized and there's no excuse for that. It's just the hardest thing to acquire and would require paying big $$$ and/or assets to get a dude or two. And because cap space was always extremely tight, grabbing cheap gritty depth just always felt easier for him. ROR was his best swing. Wish he did the same for a skilled two way d, just once post-Muzzin.

He got Erik Gustafsson I guess. But they desperately needed a skilled minute eater obviously.

He also has to play for two more years. The 9th, which may or may not pan out, and the 25th which is a crapshoot in terms of producing any kind of impact NHLer, and then two picks fifty years from now, is just such a shit return. The only leverage you have is using Florida's desire to get Brady asap to get a better deal now, with a full week before the draft.

Time was on their side, so I would've used it if I were them, even if it eventually yielded no better return.

Fuck the Sens and fuck Baby Tkachuk.

That said, I hope Sens fans mercilessly boo the big baby every time he's on the ice.

Poor baby demands a long-term contract but is too much of a baby to see it through.

He's chasing a Cup of course, but also admitting that he can't Captain a franchise, and that he's more suited to a complimentary role.

Big baby.

If Dickinson gets 5x $4m then Carlo absolutely has value.
I gotta believe that one of those later round picking teams (after say pick 20) would stupidly give up their pick for a 29 year old big boy RHD who has some brand name recognition, is cheap, and could be extended as part of the deal.

I think Chayka is maybe trying to shoot for greater value by including him in a package for an actual player though.

I already wanted Chayka to go out and add another impact forward on the trade market, but even moreso now. As always, the Atlantic is going to be a bitch to get out of in the playoffs in Bettman's stupid playoff format, so we've got to keep up with the arms race.

What is Ottawa winning in the next two years that matters more than getting the most value they can get for him now? Dude wanted out, get as much as you can for him, and move on.

Most of the stars in the league come from the top 10, Ottawa has a chance (and a good one in this draft imo, it's a much better than average draft) of picking up a player similar to Brady. Go watch an Ethan Belchetz highlight reel and try not to fondle yourself. He'll be there at the 9 spot. Or as someone else mentioned, pick up a D (Gustafsson or Rudolph) and trade Chabot for a forward. Or keep Chabot and trade the other 2 1sts and a 2nd for a pretty good winger.

Time was on their side

Except it wasn't. The offers were going to get progressively worse from here.

Yeah, this will push him even more. It's also another nail in the coffin for Knies rumors.

Like I keep saying, you gotta just keep adding. No subtracting of good players. The same way Florida got to keep Lundell and parted with some future picks instead.

There's no reason the offers should get worse over the course of this week. I agree that they were treading water and going nowhere. The last two years especially proved that. So it's good that they got out in front of it, but they should've pushed on every pressure point they could find, including creating the optics that they'd sit on him for another two years before trading him without an improved return. Naturally, they didn't want to lose the chance to get the picks in this current draft so that they could make the selections they want, but they should've taken it down to the wire. On Friday morning they may have gotten a call that Lundell would be included instead of those two future picks, and off to the races with a much better return.

I believe Florida must have been absolutely salivating over the chance to add Brady, even just for marketing purposes of having the two brothers on the team. They would be pressured not to let the opportunity slip by. I would've waited much longer to see if they'd blink.

This fits under the cap:

What if they traded for Larkin, or Hellebuyck instead? Then there's no offer at all, nevermind a good one. They were clearly looking to add. They traded Samoskevich to add picks so that they had surplus to spend on another good player. They were shopping, and now is the time for that.

I would've waited much longer to see if they'd blink.

When time is not on your side, don't tempt fate. This is how you end up giving Mitch Marner away for Nic Roy.

Man, you're really looking to add some long bois to our forward group, eh? 12 feet and 9 inches worth of Marchment & Tuch.

Have to say though, neither of those guys excite me much as our big additions up front. Florida just added an impact player in his 20's who's going to be there and in his prime for a while. I want to see something imaginative and ambitious like that, rather than just overpaying two guys on the wrong side of 30 who happen to be two of the bigger fish in an extremely shallow UFA pool.

And Hayton would be ok...just OK.
