2018-19 Miscellaneous News Thread

Gonna be next Tuesday before the storm gets here, at the rate it's slowing now. Initially was Wednesday, now Saturday.

This may be the death knell for Princeville. After Floyd and Matthew, it's hard to see that town lasting a third inundation.

Damned thing nearly made me casualty 1 tonight taking down a dead tree with my neighbor so it doesn’t come down on his house. Dead bastard did not want to come down.

I got gas at new Bern ave. BP last night late. Was packed at 5:30 tonight.

Stupid **** hurricanes.

Huna, it's good that you could prepare with just a day or so. Barb and I were down all last week when Flo was expected to stay at sea. As the high pressure ridge to do that moved outward and changed the track toward the coast and now we're in the crosshairs tho' the bitch is now again aimed more at Wilmington. We started our prep then back to Raleigh as I knew I wuz gonna need my truck. Back Sunday and we're close to going back to Raleigh tomorrow (Wed).

After so many years without a big one nearby, Fran was the first where I had to deal with the aftermath as an adult and that was in Raleigh. Then Isabell when we had the place at Oriental, Ophelia here which we didn't even file a claim on. But Irene just about did me in and Flo looks to be far too similar! For some understanding look at this:

Scale back out until Pamlico Sound is in view. Hurricanes and even Nor'easters go across the sound turning CCW pushing walls of water - storm surge - up the Neuse. That causes more damage than the wind per se. Irene damaged soffits 15' off the ground which is 6' above usual water level. It did a lot more than soffits. I'm really tired and don't know what we'll have to deal with in Raleigh due to the heavy rain forecast of up to 15" and slow movement . We're 'up high' but low-lying houses and streets can be a major problem. Buena fortuna to all.

Good luck & be safe Allen -- I worry about you & my other friends down that way whenever the coastal area is threatened. That turn they projected last night is good for us in Raleigh area, less good for Fayetteville/Charlotte I think.

Not good for Wilmington either. The track had gone as far north as Morehead City, where it would have run over Allen, but has kept moving south since. It looks like Wilmington will now take either a direct hit or be on the wrong side of the eye wall.

Yeah, they usually make that feature free during hurricanes. It’s the right thing to do.

Just discovered one shortfall with the app. I went to a station that showed as open and it is. But they’re only pumping regular. My car takes premium. There is no way to indicate what grades the station is pumping. Other than that, the information on the site is pretty good, I think I’ll keep it with my other travel apps.

If you do a lot of driving on Interstate highways, I can’t recommend iExit enough. It will shadow all the amenities at each exit and also shows rest areas. It was invaluable on my drives between Raleigh and Austin.

LMAO, Bill. Mine doesn't, when she gets something going it's like trying to convince a locomotive to make a turn without the tracks!

The track and forecast have changed again, moving to the south. It relieves some of the pressure off of me here and with reduced risk of flooding in Raleigh... But we will still get wind, high water and surge - just not as bad.

I have cousins in Florence who are going to meet the namesake, that I'm now more concerned about and jeez is that FLAT country with no place for water to go. I also have cousins in Kure Beach - oooof!

LOL. I was out doing the same thing with a neighbor last night. I had the wedge the living crap out of that tree to get it down and it was so far gone that it was hollow in the core of the trunk. How can a tree that's been visibly, obviously dead for YEARS be so stubborn to give up the ghost and get on the ground? Poplars are of the devil. When you want them down, they won't play along. If you want them to live, they drop like flies.

does the car require premium gas? some cars do but others just "recommend" premium. If premium is not required you can use 87 octane if that's all you can find in a pinch and the computer will adjust the engine.

It requires 91 octane but good luck finding that. So I really don’t have a choice but to use premium.

My car only takes premium too but you can use regular and add an octane booster sold at most gas stations.

Yeah. Florence is starting to remind me of that hurricane a few years ago that looped back on itself before heading ashore. These things defy prediction sometimes.

That was Wilma and it looped back and swing right into me.
