2019-20 Canes Miscellaneous News Thread

The boys are back (except Nino). They’re on the ice.

Edit: Nino was late. Suicides for him.

Assume this is Break Day #5 and on-ice activity is voluntary?

I did see a note on a whiteboard in the background during the last post-game interviews that said "Ice Available at PNC Arena 11 AM on Wed. and Thurs."

And since Vegas is also wrapping up their 5-day post-All-Star break today, do we think they are having to fly tomorrow morning...or are they perhaps already in town?

I'm hoping they fly tomorrow morning and then have to play us that night.

In the videos that Chip and Maniscalco posted, there were coaches on the ice. And if it was voluntary, everyone volunteered.

In his column this morning, Pierre LeBrun suggests 6 trades that make sense. One of them is Sami Vatanen from the Devils to the Canes for a 2020 2nd rounder, with the Devils retaining 30% of his salary. He prefaces it by saying that he knows Dundon doesn’t like rentals and would prefer a hockey trade, and e thinks Waddell inquired about Dumba. But with Paul Fenton gone from the Wild, he’d have to make a real trade and not a theft.

FWIW, he thinks the Kings should send Martinez to the Avs for a 2021 2nd rounder and a prospect whose upside is bottom 6 forward.

Remember ... LeBrun has some sort of in with Waddell, so his Canes stuff tends to be on point. If he's suggesting Vatanen, then the chances are really good that he's doing so because we've scouted the guy. That doesn't mean it will happen, but there's a decent chance that somebody's actually giving it some thought.

I'll say one thing about "rentals" too. I agree that Dundon isn't a fan. Heck, he's said as much out loud so that ain't much of a stretch. That said, there are situations where it makes sense and we're in one. With Dougie missing, the staff is clearly struggling to find a back six that works game to game. Since Dougie's absence is relatively long term, but still temporary, then a rental to help cover the gap makes sense. If TVR were playing better, this might be a moot point, but he's scuffling.

teams use rentals for injured guys all the time like Weight and Rechhi in 06 for the Canes.

Weight wasn’t really a rental for an injured player. Don’t forget, he was acquired in January. Recchi, however, was acquired the day after Erik Cole had his neck broken by Recchi’s teammate. Dundon just doesn’t like rentals. He’d rather have cost and team certainty for a longer term.

Here's some info on the four teams (+ us) that the Canes face in the upcoming road trip:

How many points do we skate away with at the end of the roadie?

You sound pretty confident that the boys will sweep. I hope you're right because they really need those points

Yeah ... I think that's realistic. A split and one bonus point would be OK for this trip. These are not easy teams to play, regardless of recent form, and the Canes sure haven't been lighting the place up or anything. Scratch out a couple of results and get back to some home cooking.
