2019-20 Canes Miscellaneous News Thread

In general, I agree ... but Fluery looking good last night shows up the real problem. No matter how solid he plays, he just doesn't have anything to offer besides the basics. And neither does TVR. They're a vanilla 3rd pairing at best, and the question is whether or not that's good enough. In order to play the way they're built to play, this team needs the back end to participate in the offensive zone in fairly significant ways. Not sure that pairing can realistically do that on the regular.

If we could just get 50+ goals out of Aho, Svech, and a few other forwards, these vanilla d guys would be great for the team.

I get that they’re not easy songs. And if the performer stays with a basic version of the lyrics and melody then I’ve never been one to be critical and am happy to excuse mistakes or out of tune singing etc.

However when you try to make the anthem your own, all bets are off.

Problem being ... that the whole system breaks down and the Canes get very offensively blunt when the D aren't pitching in to help with possession and to generate a shot threat from the points. The more vanilla the D, the less the forwards score 5v5.

The young man they had on New Year's Eve vs. the Habs who sang part of the Canadian anthem in French deserves more repeat gigs just for the classy style points with Montreal in town. Frankly even more Adam Lee Decker would be appreciated. Last night's anthems were painful.

When is Scotty McCreery going to give it a go? I was expecting him in last year's playoffs at least once.

I ran into Scotty at the game against the Ducks. He wasn't hard to spot ... walking the main concourse in a red home jersey with the name "McCreery" on the back. That guy is absolutely the nicest locally famous person I've ever met other than maybe Derrick Whittenburg

rumor says Canes interested in D man Brenden Dillon from SJ , he would be a rental.
Wouldn't be the dumbest move in the world. Dillon is limited, but pretty effective. He sits third on the Sharks D in both goals and wins above replacement ... one of three guys in that group with positive numbers. At $3.2 million this year, he'd slot nicely into Dougie's LTIR slot, which means the Canes would still have their couch cushion fund available at the deadline. Again ... Dillon is limited. He's not soaking up any power play time or anything, but he's decent 5v5 and handles his defensive business. I like him better on that left side than playing Fleury a ton and hoping he finds something other than what he's shown so far ... or calling up Forsling and hoping he'd be better.

Other teams are looking at him such as Boston. Canes would probably have to offer more than is typical since teams know Hamilton is out and the Canes need a replacement sooner than later.

That's the rub ... although Carolina has a ton more to offer than Boston. They don't have any surplus draft picks and have next to nothing left in their development pipeline. Carolina could spin off one of those extra picks and a halfway decent prospect without breaking a sweat. We could even offer a budget friendly NHL veteran or two. Guys like Forsberg and Forsling probably aren't doing us much good in the long term, but they could fill a short term need for somebody looking to re-set.

Moving Forsberg has the added benefit of allowing Helvig to move up to Charlotte and Booth to move back to Greenville from loan.

Yeah ... I threw him in because he'd instantly be at least the second best goalie in their system. Not that San Jose's front office ever seems to notice how bad their goaltending is or anything.

Dillon would be an interesting add as it would give us 2 big and physical blueliners after going years without too much real snarl on the blueline. Dillon plays big and mean, maybe bigger and meaner than Edmundson. Completely different type of blueliner than Alec Martinez is.

I don't particularly care for Alec Martinez having that extra year on his contract. I would be worried that could get in the way of us retaining Edmundson or replacing Edmundson with a similar blueliner who actually plays physical. I don't really want to pay Alec Martinez beyond this season, I'm not sure I want to pay him for THIS season.

Could be worse, it could be Matt Dumba with 3 years/$6 million AAV, $17.4 million actual left. His teammate Jonas Brodin is in the same boat as Martinez, 1 more year at $4.167 million AAV, $3.5 million actual.

Canes also looking at Alec Martinez, would also be a rental.
If this were true, then I'd be all in on Martinez. He's a great fit for what Carolina does with their blueline as a rental. Sadly, he's got an extra year on his contract at $4 million, when he'll be 34 years old. Hard pass.

From twitter. On this day in 1999, the Canadiens limited the Hurricanes to just 10 shots on goal, a team record, but lose 3-1. Montreal outshot Carolina 18-0 in the third period, but Arturs Irbe made 44 saves to pick up the win . I remember the game but thought Canes had around 15 shots
