2019-20 Canes Miscellaneous News Thread

If you are going to use your STM upgrade credit (or pay cash to do so) your original ticket into the arena is required to get you through the door. I don't think it necessarily matters if you are in the arena or outside the arena when you do the upgrade but your original ticket is required for entrance into the arena. Nothing happens to your original ticket during the upgrade process, they effectively will send you an image of your upgraded tickets after the transaction is complete. That image will show you own the upgraded ticket(s) and get you past the ushers checking tickets, but it cannot be used to get into the arena.

Yes, use the app the execute upgrades. After you enter that option on the app, log on to your STM account using your id and PW within that portal to get access to your upgrade funds. Then select your upgrades (which become available about 90 minutes before game time).

thanks for the info. Going to upgrade for the Jets game as I assume it will be a smaller crowd.

do the Canes use the original studio Sweet Caroline version? Sounds different to me. And I know Red Sox use it too.

The Athletic did their annual anonymous players' poll. The only Canes showing was Slavin who came in at #5 for best defensive defenseman. He trailed Hedman, Weber, McDonagh and Giordano. Decent company. Slavin and Aho also received votes for most underrated but did not make the top 5.

Wes McCauley was the runaway winner for best ref. St. Pierre lapped the field for worst ref. Tim Peel made the top 5 for best and worst.
I'd take issue with Weber still clinging to the top five for much of anything.

And St Pierre may be the worst regular official I've ever seen in any sport. That's freaking saying something considering I follow International soccer as well as college basketball. That dude is worse than some FIFA refs who later were proven to be on the take.

it might be obvious but how many people want to be a pro ref/ump? I guess the pay is good but there is all the travel. I suppose if you live in an NHL/NBA/MLB/NFL city you get a few "home" games a year. Most NFL refs have full time jobs along with reffing.

A former catcher for the Braves is now a college BB ref, Bruce Benedict. I guess he chose BB over being a baseball ump.

I can't imagine being a pro ref/ump. I umped Little League "Farm League" (which is a level below your LLWS level) for exactly 2 years as a teenager for some extra summer scratch and the parents are the absolute worst. I can't imagine being a pro official where adult coaches and players are going to to be out there barking at you while the fans decry every single call.

Keep the pay and the travel, no thanks!

When my kids played sports I never said anything to the refs.

One game my son was playing for a different soccer team and 4 minutes into the game the ref ejected the coach's brother for saying something, I assume he said a 4 letter word. Only time I ever saw a parent ejected in over 10 years of my kids playing.

The only thing worse than reffing kids is reffing ‘C‘ league.
the parents are the worst part of the kids and we had to kick parents out of the rink and on several occasions the police needed to be called. Parents threatened to beat the crap out of us after the game. I had one parent open the door and come out on the ice after me.
C league was bad as you couldn’t tell if the infraction was intentional or accidental. If everything that was a penalty was called there would be no one skating.

When I lived in New Jersey, I officiated baseball and football at the high school level and below and basketball and soccer at the rec league level. And it didn’t help me when my daughter was playing hockey and to a lesser extent, soccer (I had to behave, I was a coach). I was an awful parent. She didn’t want to ref either sport to pick up some cash because she didn’t want to deal with parents like me.

OK boomer. :p When's the last time you actually saw a C league game?

Pray tell what a "C league" is. thx
Jerry, this refers to adult hockey levels. Most of the house leagues around here are designated as "B" or "C," and there are often "upper," "intermediate" and "lower" tiers within them.

Contrary to Mr. Wind's assertion above, the level of play even at the Lower C level is pretty decent. Friends of mine who play in Toronto tell me of leagues that go down as far as "F" or "G" classification and how from what they've seen of the Lower C league I play in, it is far better than the bottom leagues up there.

Based on the lines at practice today, it looks like Wallmark is the odd man out tomorrow and Martinook is in at 4C. I think that’s a huge mistake. That likely means the return of Staal to PP2 since Haula and Aho are on PP1. It also means we’d be down a penalty killer again, unless Haula is going to resume his early season role on the kill.

if what you’re saying is correct and I’ve no reason to doubt it, It’s changed a lot from when I reffed and taught adult LTP. And this is good!
I’m not sure we had a lower C, just A,B and C I think. This was back in the mid 90’s.
C league was for beginners and was more an instructional league. when we called a penalty we took pains to explain what they did and why we called it. A lot of the players could skate forward and when they tried to change direction or skate backward their sticks would be swinging trying to keep balance. They also stumbled into each other quite a bit. Basically they had no stick control and little skate control.

Agreed andyt. Lucas Wallmark is our ONLY trustworthy centers if you need to win a Dzone draw (or any draw). Add he has actually been pretty decent offensively as well, and you are going to intentionally sit him because? Did he get dinged last night?

If they are going to rotate rest games across Martinook, Wallmark, Dzingel, Nino, Haula, Foegele, Necas and McGinn then fine, I guess (no rest for Aho, Teuvo, Staal, Svech). I would have started with Dzingel and Nino.

Wallmark is 3rd in faceoff % behind Haula and Staal. Haula is at 56.0%, Staal at 54.67%, Wallmark at 50.68% and Aho at 46.01%. Martinook is at 52.2% but only 69 draws. Because of his injuries, Haula has only taken half of the draws that Staal has, 475 compared to 951. Wallmark has taken 588 and Aho 615. They’re all great on PP face offs (except Aho). Staal is at 70.4%, Haula at 61.0%, Wallmark at 69.2%. All are well below 50% when short handed, Staal is closest at 47.9%, Aho and a Wallmark are below 40%, Haula is below 30%.

going to the game at the Devils March 29th. What local stores sell bullet proof vests? :) It is still Newark after all. In the past Newark made the south Bronx look like Paris.

Newark is 96th on this list of most dangerous cities, measured by violent crime rate.

Look ... why not go ahead and take a gratuitous shot at Durham while you have your broad, off the mark stereotype brush in the paint can. Or stop. One of the two.

I guess Newark is better now that Tony Soprano got whacked? My GF works in Durham and don't see a problem with most of the city. Every city has "rough" areas Raleigh, Charlotte, Greensboro, and so.

I guess I should mention that long ago I lived pretty close to Newark , around 10 miles. But if it's better now that's good. Mom grew up in Jersey City, dad in Hoboken and I mostly grew up here after being born in NJ. I still have many cousins in northern NJ.
