More on Puljujarvi and Gauthier from ProHockey Rumors.
https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2019/10/edmonton-oilers-linked-to-hurricanes-julien-gauthier.html

Of course, the Oilers could also try to pry Gauthier out of Raleigh without moving Puljujarvi. Tyler Benson, Kailer Yamamoto, and Ryan McLeod are all promising young forward prospects that the team could dangle for the Hurricanes as part of the return for Gauthier. If Edmonton truly has their mindset on acquiring the up-and-coming power forward and Carolina does not share in their high regard for him, a deal is very likely to be made, one way or another.
Wait. We care what Pro Hockey Rumors says now? I didn't get that memo. If that's been the source for all this speculation then I think everybody can relax.

The Hurricanes sent Brian Gibbons back to the Checkers today. There's no practice today and there's no work on a call up either. They could go with 7 D against the Ducks if TVR is ready to go, but I assume they'll fly somebody out today.

I bet they go with 7 dmen. Charlotte is playing Utica tomorrow and Syracuse on Saturday, so whomever they recall will probably miss Saturday’s game too. If he flies back with the team, best case scenario is probably a mid-afternoon arrival in Syracuse.

First World problems, but I hope they get enough Cap room banked to start carrying a spare forward AND defenseman on these long trips.

Lebrun tying us to Jesse and Ho-Sang now... ugh. Just say pass.

He says the Canes are looking for a top 9 forward. Ho-Sang ain’t it, he‘s a 13 goal scorer in the AHL. And we’ve talked Puljujarvi to death.

Just gonna throw out there, Benn would require some re-work, and serious negotiations... just not really likely, but the current management has pulled off surprises for sure.... otherwise, prioritize coaxing Willy to come back.... be ready for x-mas time frame.... wouldn't he, Staal and Svechnikov form a pretty decent line?

And much safer/less costly then the rumored players we're looking at (Ho-Sang, Puljujarvi, Benn)

You can add Jamie Benn to the list of possible Hurricanes' interest....

Ridiculous. He‘s in the 3rd year of a 8 year/$76 million contract. Most of what’s left is signing bonuses with $8 million in bonus and $1 million salary each year until the 24-25 season. There’s no cap room for a $9.5 million AAV.

Oh I agree Andy, no surprise this is an Eklund rumor....
Idiot rumor

Beyond ridiculous. It's complete fiction. He wouldn't even be a good fit for how they play.

Looking for a top 9 forward and inquiring about players who can't hold down a steady NHL job? Uhh...yeah, we don't generally do stupid here anymore.

I would be hard pressed to name any team that would see a trade for Jamie Benn being a smart move. Declining asset just 3 years into an 8 year deal with an AAV for $9.5 million on a contract that is pretty much buyout proof. 30 years old. The Canes almost certainly would want nothing to do with that situation. Add in the fact we would have to gut our roster to fit Benn in and I think its pretty easy to see how likely the Canes interest is in Benn.

LeBrun is usually pretty credible, and let's be honest, the Canes have an embarrassment of riches in draft capital, so once the asking price comes down on Puljujarvi, it's a pretty safe gamble for the Canes to move let's say a second round draft pick for a young player like that. Ho Sang is perhaps a Brindy project if you went that route, but I still think the Canes will continue to sniff around Puljujarvi because of teh Aho/Turbo connections to him.

I have no doubt that the Canes are sniffing around Puljujarvi. But Ho-Sang doesn’t fit the top 9 narrative, he’s not an upgrade over McGinn, who would be the odd man out.

Agreed. And although I have some ideas of us getting Puljujarvi, the cost always seems too much. Even though McGinn can't finish, right now he's 100% a proven commodity for what he IS good at vs Jess who's done what so far in the NHL, albeit under shit management, still - whine.
And Ho-Sang, for the love of god say NO. Such a high prospect who's best numbers are 13 goals in the A? Nobody gets a free pass to try and see if they'll magically become some player they have never been. Ho-Sang has had problems since forever and everywhere he's played. I doubt Brindy wants to touch that.

LeBrun IS credible, especially with Waddell in an actual decision making position. Apparently those two are tight from days gone by.

That said, he's not always the best calibrated in terms of how he fleshes out the rumors. So, year ... I could see Carolina looking for a top 9 forward. We are in fact playing Brock McGinn in the top 9 currently ... with the only east replacement Warren Foegele, both of whom are fourth liners. In McGinn's case, that's just his level ... in Foegele's, at least for now. So ... yeah ... Top 9 foward.

Ho-Sang is not that now, and may very well never be. He's a highly skilled head case ... no thanks. Puljujarvi is that, in EUROPE, which is NOT the same as being that in the NHL. He also seemingly may or may not care about this circumstance ... which is a problem in my book. Benn is a borderline criminally over-paid jumbo center better suited to an era that is rapidly going out of fashion, who has a bad habit of not actually doing anything for fairly long stretches. How that would fit with the Canes is a mystery to me and I'm assuming his name gets attached to rumors like this more because of hopeful thinking on the part of his agent than anything else. See Nash, Rick for prior examples of this. I'm sure the guy is unhappy in Dallas as the owner seems to hate the guy, thus the agent quietly agitates for ways out. You'd also have to trade away probably two players to get the guy under the cap ... maybe more. No.

I’d be surprised if we make a move for any of those guys with the aim of improving the team this year.

I could see a multiplayer move involving McGinn and one of those guys PLUS a current top 9 forward with other prospects/picks fleshing out the deal on our end.

I see no way we would want Benn.

I could see the Canes flipping McGinn, Foegele or Gauthier for a guy that they feel like is a better fit in the top 9 right now ... but no. None of the current rumor list really fits the bill. MAYBE Puljujarvi ... maybe.

I will say, however, that it's nice to actually be mentioned in these rumor columns and be linked to decent players. It's a change from the last decade or so when every time Carolina got linked to somebody it was some sort of reclamation project for some vet on the way out.
