2019-20 Canes Miscellaneous News Thread

According to Chip, no Haula or Dzingel at practice at RCI today. Dzingel hasn’t practiced in a while so that’s not unusual. Martinook was on the assault bike.

RBA said that DIngel has a “little nick”. Haula doesn’t have a concussion and will be given a few more days off.

If you don't have a subscription to The Athletic (first of all, what's wrong with you?) be watching Sara Civian's social media. She has requested that the site put her lovely appreciation article on Mike Maniscalco up outside of their pay wall. It's VERY much worth the read.

Have a tissue handy.

This. I'm not as gung-ho about sports as many of folks on this thread are, but if you're looking for insightful, well-written articles about the Canes and hockey, there is no better place to find them - all year long.

For sure. Even if you’re only interested in hockey, they have a writer covering each team and several national writers like LeBrun and Burnside.

We've talked off and on about the development and growth of the area around the arena, so I wanted to pass along the news that there will be a new Hilton Garden Inn built on Wade Park Ave right across Edwards Mill from the PNC Arena. That's the little commercial retail and office development on the Wade Ave side of Cardinal Gibbons. Not my favorite Hilton brand hotel, but it'll offer a nice, new, mid-level option for those visiting the arena from out of town. And hotels generally spin off restaurants and the like, although there are a couple of restaurants in that development already.

Haula practiced today in a regular jersey, so he looks good to go for tomorrow. No call ups, so it looks like 11 forwards, 7 D in Columbus tomorrow night.

Also, the top 9 reverted back to the opening night setup. Aho has Nino and McGinn, Huala is with his usual bunch and Staal gets Turbo and Svech. Starting to wonder what Aho might have to do to get himself separated from Nino. If Nino can't get going eventually, Brindy's going to have to break down and do something drastically different ... which we all know he hates. C'mon Nino ... knock off the Swiss Miss the Net act already.

Today's useless Canes stat.

Dougie Hamilton Calendar year 2019 stats to date:

53 Games
20! Goals
19 Assists
+23

That paces out to 31 Goals 29 Assists and +36 over an 82 game season.

Mark Giordano is 2nd in goals scored by a blueliner in calendar 2019 with 13 goals.

Hamilton's 20 goals over the period also paces all Canes players. Aho has 17, Justin Williams had 16, Turbo has 15, Nino 14

For people who wondered last season what would happen if Brindy would give Dougie proper first pairing and first PP minutes ... there's your answer.

I have said it before, I just don't see the two having chemistry together anymore. Since the collision. And yet it seems to have sealed their fate and the two have been almost inseparable since. Whatever. It would seem RBAs approach is to put the three leads (as in the metal) together hoping the'll dig themselves out of their rut. McGinn Aho Neiderrieter. Ouch. Well they'll get LOTS of chances that's for sure.

That explains this year’s output, last year was after his broken finger healed.

I don’t think you can see that from watching. If it is something we can tell by watching on TV then it would seem that our coach would pick up on that. I don’t know what Aho’s issue is but I seriously doubt he’s angry with Nino about the collision. I don’t think Aho’s issue has much to do with Nino. And vice versa. Two of those 3 need to find their game.

Based on the underlying stats, I don't see the Aho line's struggles to score as an Aho issue. He's still driving play and setting up tons of chances and generally doing his thing. His scoring has typically taken awhile to get going over now four years, so as long as he's driving play I don;t see him as a problem. Nino is another story. This cycle of boom and bust has been a problem for him throughout his NHL career, and he's so frustrated now that he seems to almost glow with it. The penalties we're seeing from him are directly related to his frustration levels, I think. This is the kind of thing that you have to play your way out of, and when he does finally break through he'll be fine.

And yeah ... C3 is right. If those two were really having a "chemistry" issue, Brindy isn't going to risk alienating his most talented player by chaining him to an albatross just for funsies.

Yeah I am more ragging on Nino. Think he's more often, too often a waste of space out there. COnsidering his talent level,. At least he's in the play still and not floating. An engaged Nino not scoring is still better than one not working. Still.

Welcome to what every fan base that has ever had Nino on their team has felt at some point. Don't turn into one of those Wild fans who told us all about how useless he was when they "dumped him on Carolina for a young center." And I'm NOT kidding ... they were online saying that crap with straight, earnest, sincere faces ... as stupid as that sounds now.

Yeah jb I follow hockey, for many many years. Regardless, just get off the bloody schneid and score already Mr Lowrider. ;)

James got his wish. According to Chip, they had 1st line Svech today, with Teravainen on the other wing. Staal had Nino and Foegele. The 3rd line was intact and McGinn and Wallmark were the 4th line, or at least 2/3 of one. No word on any callups for tomorrow but the Checkers play at home tonight so maybe someone comes up after the game? The 1:00 start tomorrow could cause a problem for that though.
