2019-20 Canes Miscellaneous News Thread

The John Forslund story had me reminiscing about another Forslund related memory from the lockout season of years gone by. So Forslund use to live in the same Scotts Mill subdivision in Apex as I did during the lockout and the local community swim team held a swim meet one evening at the clubhouse pool. Forslund was asked to do the announcing for the swim meet over the PA system. Like only John can, his excitement and exuberance in calling the action from the pool was of course vintage Forslund. Some older woman, perhaps a Grandmother of one of the swimmers that night went over to Forslund and said ever so matter-of-factly, "wow, you are so good on that mic you should consider doing that someday as a career"...she had no idea who John was or what he did for a living...but I still smile when I remember that night and how John during the lockout season turned a community swim meet gig into Game 7 of the Cup Final with his signature call and voice!

The Canes released their compensation plan for arena and event staff. They’ll be paid based on expected hours worked during the last 7 home games in March (but not the 1 April home game?). Funding will come from Dundon and the Carolina Hurricanes Foundation. Players have also made a “generous“ donation.

The Arena food service company will also be making a food donation to the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle on Thursday.

Waddell told the Michaels, Smith and Maniscalco, on their podcast that the arena has over $300k of food for events that were postponed or cancelled. Hence the donation.

Did any other STMs receive a David Ayres t-shirt from the team? I briefly stopped in my office today and there was one shipped to me there with no note except for a "You're Welcome" message on the receipt inside. At first, I thought it was a gift from a client, but the two most likely candidates denied involvement. The return address was Rebecca Winebar, who I've never met, but she is apparently the Retail Operations Manager for the Canes.

I am a partial season ticket holder , no shirt for me so far. I wear XL but I figure they will probably send out mediums. I would guess only full season ticket holders get it?

They sent me a medium; it will probably end up being my wife’s! My guess is they probably have a bunch left over and want to get rid of the inventory given that there won’t be games for a while.

I upgraded from a 22-game plan this year to a full plan for next year...not sure if that’s why they sent it...or if it was a gift from someone else.

A little levity for the day, stolen from Twitter, along the lines of the Chuck Norris memes:

Slavin: Did you guys hear Rod got the virus?

Marty: No??

Slavin: Yeah, and now the Coronavirus is in isolation.

Best player in that draft is pushing it, but not as hard as you'd think at first blush. Most of the guys who have proven to be very good NHLers out of that class are kind of all on the same level, so it's a matter of what you value. Turbo ranks REALLY high FWIW, as do the two high end goaltenders (Vasilevskiy and Hellebuyck). Then you've got some high value forwards in the same general class as Turbo ... Hertl, Galchenyuk, Filip Forsberg, Pearson) and a pile of quality d-men (Slavin, Gostisbehere, Trouba, Reilly, Hampus Lindholm, Dumba, Pareyko). Man, if you re-drafted right now I'm not sure you wouldn't take whatever one of that list you felt like you needed the most. There's no superstars but there's a lot of quality ... and no real standout Top 3 like in most draft classes.

Slavin might go down as one of the Top 10 all time biggest draft steals when his career is over when you consider where he was drafted. He was never even a highly touted college player yet once he hit the NHL he just seemed to take off like few others ever could, it's amazing to see his development year to year.

Canes sign David Cotton. They also sign his brother Jason, an undrafted college senior who was a Hobey Baker finalist at Sacred Heart.

Huh ... good. I know there was a lot of skepticism about getting Cotton signed after he went back for his senior year at BC, but he's a good plugger and at this point a very mature all-around forward. He's done everything for BC for two seasons now and should be ready to be a minor league impact player, at a minimum. I dunno about the brother ... the Atlantic isn't exactly the strongest conference in "cawledge hawkey" and his Hobey short list season came at 25 years old. He lost a couple of years when he crapped out at Northeastern as a freshman and then took a year off before re-surfacing at Sacred Heart. I mean, I'm sure he's probably going to be useful in the A ... probably. We needed to re-stock at that level, so ... cool.

Because he’s 25, Jason only gets a 1 year deal. But yes, Charlotte needs a restock...badly.
