2019-20 Canes Miscellaneous News Thread

The Athletic ranked the NHL's broadcast teams according to in-market and out-of-market fans' opinions. John & Tripp took the top honors. I think you already know who finished dead last: The Jack Edwards Show.
And they finished last largely due to Edwards, combined with NESN's LSD trip looking graphics package ... which I'll admit is almost as annoying at that creep Edwards. Almost. That guy is a disgrace.

The Jack Edwards show on NESN for hockey is an embarrassment to the sport, how that guy has lasted that long is puzzling. Brickley over the years has also fallen into the same terrible homer takes and commenting as his partner and as a tandem they are the worst in the business.

I second the take on Laughlin in D.C., he was always at the top of the worst list for most fans, and his whiny voice is like nails on a chalkboard.

To me, the league has an obligation to guide and direct local or regional broadcasts away from employing clowns like Edwards and Laughlin who are simply bad for the game as a whole, even if they are accepted within their market. Heck, this survey shows that Edwards isn't even as accepted in his own market as people like to think he is. NESN is just so tone deaf that they don't care. Which shows if you've ever watched that network's coverage of basically anything ... ever. They suck. Always have.

Laughlin’s only redeeming quality is that he was one of the drivers behind the Capital Beltway Hockey League creating a girls division. The Raleigh teams that weren’t designated as “Nationals bound” played in that league when my daughter played. That meant the closest road trip was Prince William, VA but at least there was a league

That Edwards finished last isn‘s surprising. What is a mild surprise is that even his home town viewers don’t like him much, he was 27th locally.

Great quote: “I would rather get a colonoscopy from Captain Hook than hear Jack Edwards announce a hockey game.”

Also to clarify, Edwards didn’t finish 27th locally; the ranking reflect viewers’ evaluations of the entire broadcast.

Correct. And based on the text in the bit on NESN, their hideous graphics package had as much to do with the low local rating as did Edwards' antics. Most Bs fans I know love the guy ... or at least they're willing to defend him. And let's be honest ... anyone who's seen that graphics package knows full well how crap it looks. It's an abomination.

The Canes are putting about 55% of full time staff on furlough through June 7. They’ll be given the opportunity to take advantage of the stimulus package. If they can’t collect 100% of their salary via unemployment insurance, they’ll receive a bonus at the end to be made whole. They’re still receiving healthcare benefits and the team will make their premium payments. Cory Lavalette tweeted tha an unknown number of employees were laid off too.

I’m not sure what other options the team had. It’s good that the fuloughed employees will be made whole and they kept their medical insurance. But the 2 month window on unemployment may be tough.

The medical insurance* thing is huge. I would hate to be laid off, but if it came with full medical insurance, that would make me feel more at ease about the situation.

*why in the world do we even have employment-based** insurance in the first place? A system like this shows its cruelty*** during a pandemic-induced recession/depression.

**never mind the fact that not all employers offer insurance as a benefit.

***I said what I said, and no, I did not stutter.

from twitter: Waddell says no player or staff member has tested positive for CV. Also Reimer and Hamilton are ready to start skating. Also he says RBA workout room at home is bigger than PNC weight room :)

McCrimmon Parkway now goes right by the new canes practice rinks. It connects Airport Blvd. to Aviation parkway. Should also ease traffic on 54. It connects to Aviation at the Evans Rd. intersection.

Hamilton, Reimer and Vatanen ready to play :

Tommy Webster died over the weekend. An original Whaler who still had close ties to the current club. The last ever Whalers team practice was held on a Saturday prior to the last ever Whalers game. It was opened to season ticket holders as a perk. About 400 showed up with the team officially eliminated from the post season. Before practice, there was one lone skater gliding back and forth, shooting pucks. It was then assistant coach Tommy Webster, The Hartford Civic Center ice all to himself for a brief moment, one last time. RIP, Hawkeye.

Yeah ... I posted a note in one of the other threads. I've lost track of what goes where lately.

Webster is a huge figure in this franchise's history
