2019-20 Canes Miscellaneous News Thread

Yeah ... it's a young-ish fanbase, but not as stupid as big market people make out. Of course, you can un-do that option pretty quickly with a stroll through the comments sections on Facebook. There are still sections of every fan base that are pretty moronic.

The other question is why would you want to do that? The dregs of every group seem to be very loud on the internet..

I mean ... every so often curiosity gets the best of you, right? Even if you're not a rubber-necker, you can't look away from the car crash sometimes.

It hit me that if there are no more games played , this season is almost the same as the years the Canes did not make the playoffs. the season just ended a few weeks earlier than the non playoff seasons.

They‘re showing the 4 wins. Games 2, 4 and 7 will be broadcast Tuesday - Thursday. John and Tripp will open the broadcasts with their view. the first 3 games will have the NHL world feed with Rick Peckham and Joe Micheletti. Game 7 will be the NBC broadcast with Doc and John Davidson.
So last night was a fun trip down memory lane for Game 1 from 2006 outside of the jittery SD feed that gave me a headache! A few things that really stood out...the linesman seemed like they thought they were the show, they booted just about every other guy out of the face off dot all night long, even to a point of giving parent-like timeouts to go over and explain themselves to the guy that got booted.

Another thing that stood out was it seemed like Pronger never left the ice for the Oilers and was a horse back there while the Canes D just did their thing with six, regular, average type defensemen with none of them really overshadowing the other, just steady, balanced play.

The Canes veteran trade acquistions that year in Dougie Weight and Mark Recchi really stood out when they needed it most. Those guys really were a big help to show how deep the Canes could roll four lines.

That SD broadcast made me wish that I still had an older TV around the house somewhere. Trying to watch that mess on a huge high def screen was weird and painful.

There was an article in the Athletic today about players considering forgoing their final paycheck and revenues and escrows. If you are subscriber and missed it, its here:

One thing I wanted to note here, based on this article, is that I had been 100% misinformed about signing bonuses and escrow. According to James Mirtle (author of the article), signing bonuses are still subjected to escrow.

So while Aho got a huge amount of money upfront this season, he lost 14% of that to escrow (and probably will get none of it back). So for players that had huge payouts this season, they are going to take a big haircut when the final numbers are calculated. Mirtle's estimate is that Aho will lose a little over $4 million of the $12 million his contract says is his compensation for this season.

He's still rich, but not as rich.

Game 1 linesmen were Jean Morin and Pierre Racicot. Morin has since retired. He was the absolute worst in the circle. Inexplicably, the 2006 final was the first of 7 consecutive finals for him. For game 2 tonight, we get Brad Watson and Bill McCreary, with Greg Devorski and Jay Sharrers on the lines. And while McGeough got the penalty shot right last night, it was McCreary who overruled Watson in game 7 and ruled Edmonton had possessed the puck on a delayed penalty call. Watson was below the goal line, McCreary was closer to The Deck than the play.

Pronger averaged more than 29 minutes per game in the series. He averaged almost 31 per game across 24 playoff games that year.

I thought signing bonuses only provided lockout protection, since most of them were due on July 1. I assumed that all compensation was subject to escrow.

They provide both lockout protection and buyout protection. Can't buyout signing bonuses, those get paid as contracted no matter what, which is why it provides little help to buyout a player who is getting almost all of their pay via signing bonuses.

But nothing saves you from escrow apparently, which is as it should be.

That two season period where Pronger dragged that Oilers team to the Finals and then teamed with Neidermayer to win the Cup with the Ducks the following season was the most impressive defense hockey I can recall from one player in the modern era. Yeah, other guys during Pronger's career were good to even great ... Neidermayer and Lidstrom top that list ... but that year and half from Pronger was off the charts. He was a one man eclipse and when paired with someone even close to same level, the whole thing seemed unfair.

I have enjoyed the 2006 trip down memory lane on Fox Sports Carolinas this week and had a few more random musings:

The speed and flow of that series was outstanding, both teams really put on a show despite all the expert naysayers at the time saying those two teams made for an awful ratings match up on the grandest stage!

Not that I needed any further evidence, but Bill McCreary for my money was the best NHL official by a country mile for as long as I have been around watching NHL games...that guy was about as good as it gets in terms of calling a fair and solid game for so many years. He just had an uncanny ability to call the game well no matter how it was played or how ugly it got. I miss him out there calling games.

Lavi deserved to stay here longer, whatever Ponytail Pete had against the guy after the Cup year, he was a solid coach and I wish he would have had a longer tenure here.

I didn't mind the SD on last night's replay, but the sound mixing was awful. Couldn't hear the announcers at all during play. Of course, that could have been deliberate...

McCreary bungled the penalty shot call in game 7. He blew the play dead from the neutral zone, rather than Watson who was below the goal line and checking for either a goal or PS.

I do remember Georges Laraque dirt bagging his way around the ice in the third period. and McCreary was having none of it.
