2019-20 Canes Miscellaneous News Thread

Lavi deserved to stay here longer, whatever Ponytail Pete had against the guy after the Cup year, he was a solid coach and I wish he would have had a longer tenure here.

There's an interesting tidbit in the '06 memories interview piece with Aaron Ward, Bret Hedican and Scott Burnside that Sara Civian posted today in The Athletic. Ward states that Ponytail Pete was not happy with Lavi for having all of the players and their families up on a platform that he had made arrangements for to celebrate the Cup win.
That photo pissed off (former Hurricanes majority owner) Pete Karmanos. We heard stories later on that he was like, “Who the hell arranged that, this is my Stanley Cup.” He was mad that the focus was taken from that being the Carolina Hurricanes Cup win and put on the Carolina Hurricanes friends and family. But whatever.

I don't think he would fire a coach over something like the families in the picture. I recall reading at the time that it was not typical for families to be on the ice after the game. Have other teams had families on the ice since 06? I assume families would go into the locker room. Also I think it was Cuba Gooding Jr in the locker room too?

Its the wonders of the NHL playoffs that turn someone with an otherwise unremarkable career like Fernando Pisani into Mike Bossy for 24 games. He was a Cam Ward game 7 save away from a possible Cup win and Conn Smythe trophy.

Always tears me up watching the end of that Game 7 especially with Chuck K.'s call. Every single time.

It's been awhile since I've posted anything here, but my spirit was renewed after watching this week's repeats of the Canes 4 wins in 2006. Having been at each of those home games, it was nice to hear Chuck's radio broadcast in the clips above. Boy, did this bring back great memories!

I hope all of you are staying safe and healthy!

To be fair, that series also transformed Cam Ward into a legend ... as opposed to the slightly above average goaltender he was for the vast majority of his career afterwards. The playoffs are funny old things like that. Turning goats into heroes and visa versa.

Lavi is my favorite of all the coaches we've had in here since the move ... fairly low bar, I know ... but I do think he had played out the string by the time Karmanos cut him loose. As much as I admire the guy, he's proven over his career to be a one trick pony as a coach. He's great at getting a team to play an aggressive system, but he's never been any good at Plan B when the personnel isn't there to make Plan A work. He lost the 2008-09 team and I don't think there was really any road that lead to him getting them back. Sometimes, it's just time to make a change. Great coach ... just the wrong one for the moment at that point.

Now ... did Pete need to dance on his grave after he fired the guy? Hell no. But that doesn't mean he made the wrong move.

Agree. Lavi was a damn good coach for the Canes at that moment in time, but whatever he had was no longer working when he was let go. Part of that is due to some management moves (or non-moves), but Karmanos was justified in letting him go.

One of the legacies of Lavi may be his influence on Rod Brind'Amour, who has adopted much of Lavi's aggressive style. Time will tell if he's successful over the long-term, but Roddy has a connection with his players that most coaches can only dream about.

Agreed. That's what has set Brindy apart early in his coaching career. For such a hard-assed guy, he really connects with his players. That's easier to do when the age gap isn't all that great, but tougher to maintain over time.

Dundon does not like the idea of games with no fans

I honestly don't think anyone LIKES the idea of having games with no fans in the seats. The idea is that you reap as much of the remaining television money as you can by holding games in whatever manner you can and then figure out the rest when other options make sense. I'm with him on the general idea though. Given the MUCH higher percentage of total NHL revenues that come from gate receipts, having ghost games seems fairly pointless. They WILL suck to play in and to watch.

This has been on the back burner for a while but it looks like the Canes move of their AHL affiliate to Chicago may be announced soon. The dominoes that have fallen since Vegas bought San Antonio should see the Panthers move into Charlotte. The Blues had been in San Antonio, the Panthers in Springfield, MA. The Blues signed a 5 year ageeement with Springfield when they lost San Antonio, leaving the Panthers without an affiliate,

Luke’s article mentions a deterioration in the relationship and it was only renewed for this year at the last minute, during training camp. Chicago will pay a higher affiliation fee than the Checkers did and the Canes will still have control over the coaching staff.

Will the extra Chicago money cover all the airline tickets they will have to buy now for callups? Or maybe they will be happy if Charlotte matches the deal Chicago offers?

It’s going to make roster management a bit more difficult. But there are plenty of flights between Raleigh and Chicago on multiple airlines. And it will be more expensive, besides the airline ticket, they’ll probably have to rent a car in Raleigh too.
