2019-20 Miscellaneous NHL/Hockey News Thread

Took them 2 months to shut down a minor league? Did they think that anyone thought it was going to start back?

I’m not sure how they could have pulled it off. More than major leagues, even the NHL, minor leagues are heavily dependent on the box office. They have local radio contracts and a few, like our soon to be Chicago Wolves have TV. But it’s the gate that gives them the bulk of their revenue. The major leagues can survive for a bit in empty stadiums but minor leagues can’t.

I'm sure they were just waiting to see if they could get the rest of their quarterly franchise operations fees out of the NHL affiliate clubs before they decided to pull the plug entirely. With the NHL clearly starting to shift past the July 1 new fiscal year line, those fees were starting to be more and more obviously not coming ... so it just calling the season dead on the table is the best way forward.

Next season is the Avs 25th anniversary in Denver. To commemorate it, they’re considering wearing Nordiques jerseys for select games. Their Chief Marketing Officer says the Canes success with Whalers jersey is part of the reason.

So they should wear it for their games against the other WHA clubs, right? And for their game at PNC, with the Canes in Whalers green?

Imagine that , wearing jerseys from an old city. It's been done in baseball and the NFL and the NBA. And now the Canes have started a NHL trend.

I wish he'd have the balls to point out the most obvious reason for this insistence on completing the season and having a full schedule in 20-21 ... which is that the league simply can't afford to refund a significant portion of their TV revenue. Period. Be a man and talk about real stuff for once, Gary

Ticket revenue too. For the full season STM, it’s probably close to 20%. The Canes had 8 home games left, out of 43 in the plan, that‘s 18.6%, I imagine other teams are pretty similar.

If they have games with limited or no fans they’re losing that ticket revenue anyway.

I have also read numerous pieces where Bettman is enchanted with the fact the Summer Olympic Games has been pushed a year to free up his darling NBC TV contract to focus on summer NHL playoffs on the network as some sort of replacement for the Olympics on that network. I'm sure in Bettman's world he envisions a late summer playoff tournament on NBC as a showcase...

Doug McKay Sr., died at 90. His claim to fame is he played 1 NHL game and it was game 7 of Stanley Cup finals in 1950 with Detroit who beat the Rangers. He was eligible but his name was left off the Stanley Cup. He also won the Calder Cup in 1950.

Another Board of Governors call at 3 today. Maybe to report on the progress made by the Return to Play Committee? I don’t think any owners are on it, I think it’s just league and NHLPA officials and 10 or so players.

To listen to/read Bob MacKenzie and Pierre LeBrun cover this thing it's as if there's all this progress being made. In fact, people meet, discuss things and then spend three days talking to their pet reporters who then act like this is all a very dynamic process. I'm getting VERY weary of this Emperor With New Clothes Fashion Show.

The US/Canada border will stay closed for non-essential travel for at least another month, until June 21. Another reason why resuming the season is closer to a pipe dream than reality. Unless of course the league gets an exception for the players who have to cross for camps.
