Scott Wheeler at The Athletic picks every team’s worst draft class from the last 20 years. He picks the 2001 draft as the worst, with a nod to 2009. The 2001 draft brought 2 guys who played in the NHL; Mike Zigomanis and Rob Zepp. First rounder was the legendary Igor Knyazev, who played 68 games for Lowell in 2002-03 before being traded to Arizona with Tanabe for Danny Markov. So he‘s indirectly responsible for Justin Williams first tour of duty, since Markov was traded straight up for Williams.
The 2009 draft is rescued by Brian Dumoulin. We also got 6 games from Rasmus Rissanen in 2014-15. IMO, the 2006 class was worse, with only Jamie McBain and a lot of dreck. But everyone in 2006 at least played in the AHL except Justin Krueger, who still plays in Switzerland and is the only active player from that class.

Look ... picking the worst out of those three drafts is 100% down to personal preference. They were all epic failures. Personally, I think the ridiculous circumstances surrounding Kynazev's selection puts 2001 over the top. Try actually scouting your first round picks, guys.
Wheeler also picked the best draft class. He picked 2010 for the Canes. Skinner, Faulk and Frederik Andersen. He gives honorable mention to the 2019 class that he says he wouldn’t be surprised if it yielded a handful of NHLers.

Yeah, for the NC era that's probably the Gold standard draft class. And in classic Canes style, it has one giant frustration in the person of a perfectly decent starting goaltender that they couldn't get signed because of Cam Freaking Ward. I agree on 2019 too. That draft class could be an absolute bombshell if even half the risks they took pay off ... and none of them really hurt their reps in the first year, either.

Latest news is Vegas has too many CV cases so they are down to Edmonton and Toronto for the hubs.
Yep, Bob McKenzie tweeted it this morning, among other things. He also said there was agreement on most issues on Phase 3/4 return to play, CBA extension, etc.

Canada has leadership who actually listen to Drs. and scientists, same as pretty much every other country in the world except this one.
Which is also how Vancouver was removed from the list.
LeBrun tweeted that it sounds like the CBA extension covers NHL participation in the 2022 and 2026 Olympics, subject to negotiations with the IOC.

So it sounds like the Eastern Conference teams to Toronto and the Western Conference teams to Edmonton.

Not necessarily. The Eastern teams might be heading to Edmonton and the Western teams to Toronto. That was the original plan when they first talked about 2 cities and trying to eliminate any sort of home or near home advantage for any team.

Most of the talk of the late says that original plan is not really an issue as much as it was in the early stages. Can you really call it much of a home ice advantage with no fans and being sequestered all in the same place?

July 1st bonuses paid out today...the drinks are on Aho...$9.87 million due to SeaBass.

I don't disagree that its almost no home ice advantage given the circumstances and the fact that teams will be locked up in hotels. Just noting that I haven't see an official statement yet from the league fully abandoning West team go East and East teams go West.

Those bonuses are subjected to escrow though. Not sure at what level, but I think we were seeing CBA negotiated numbers capping escrow for '20-21' at 20%? That is a big haircut off of those bonuses before taxes.
Take Aho's $9.87 million.
20% escrow (probably money he won't get back given how things are looking) brings that to $7.9 million
Then taxes take another 50% Drinks are still on Aho, but he only really takes home $3.95 million of that $9.87 million.

What are the taxes like in Toronto and Canada? I calculated Aho losing 50% to taxes (37% Fed max rate, 5.25% NC tax and then 7.2% for Fed Social Security and Medicare taxes). I think the overall tax rate is higher than that for someone working in Toronto (although there are games that can be played to reduce the burden I believe?)
